Hello my name is Helen and I’m an owner of 10 guinea pigs.
I recently rescued a male guinea pig I believe he was about 6 months old.
He was advised on freeads as a female. Long story short I drove there and turns out he’s a male. The state of the living conditions was appalling. All my guinea pigs are girls. He came with what looked like a hamster cage! 😡😡and fed on bird seed. As he was a breeder for birds. With a few stern words i left with. Him peanut I made him. For him home made a separate cage. Give him a good look over. He was very vitamin c deficiency. Gave him a pile of hay some pellets and he munched away. I gave him vitamin c drops each days 1ml. His fur started growing back 3 weeks on he was doing well putting weight on I got him a little friend a baby. They were both inseparable. I was so pleased. Then on Sunday he was a bit quiet but they had been running about in there new bigger cage. And it was warm here in the uk. Then Monday I noticed he was a sleep a bit in a weird position and he got up and was walking around with his head slightly tilted. Panic set in ringing round vets on a bank holiday weekend was useless I got an appointment for 8am Tuesday.
I fed him critical care through the day water. I threw everything at him to keep him going but he was giving up. He died 3.30 Tuesday morning. I’ve not stopped crying since I never got to know what was wrong why it happened he was so happy running around. Then he just dies. This is the 1st guinea pig I’ve lost.
I can’t get over it was it my fault ? With his past and what he went through an he was still young so lovable took to me like I’d had him years. Can anyone help or think what happened just so I can try and come to terms with him dying.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please don’t think this was your fault. You are not to blame.

I would possibly think perhaps a stroke or something neurological… nothing you could have done to prevent this at all.
A vets visit if he had made it to then would not have saved him or cured whatever had gone on here.

You are feeling guilt from the grief process which is a cruel unfair emotion. Please be kind to yourself and know you rescued this little one and in the short time you had him he knew unconditional love

Please feel free to leave a memorial to him in our rainbow bridge section.

Thank you for your kind words! It really does mean a lot. Can vitamin c deficiency cause complications like this ? Even if he’s had the right food and I was giving him vitamins c every day.
Yes i most definitely will leave him a memorial

So sorry that you lost your piggy.
You ensured that the last weeks of his life were filled with love and care.
@sport_billy is right in suggesting it was probably a stroke or neurological condition.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve
