Hi everyone, as a lot of you know, Pebbles was spayed on the 7th. The surgery went well and she was on metacam for a week, also healing nicely and has been for her first post-op check which the vet nurse was pleased with her.

She has her second post op check on Saturday which I'm glad about as I'm slightly concerned about how her healing has headed. It seems to be since her metacam has stopped - she just seems quite lumpy in that area and the wound looks quite raised. I've never gone through a spay so I'm not sure what's normal.

She did seem quite off yesterday and quite subdued but I put that down to the hot weather, she seems better today though. Any idea's on if this is normal?

Does the area feel warm / hot when you touch it? Is the area around the wound red?
Is the wound / area around the wound swallon? One or more of these things can indicate an infection.

If you are concerned, please do not think you have to wait until Saturday. May be phone your vet and express your concerns x

Hmm I'm not sure - I think it's just a normal temperature. I wouldn't say it was swollen and it's not red either. She is acting fine in herself and is eating, drinking and pooping. The wound just feels slightly lumpy for some reason.

Obviously I wouldn't hesitate to get her to the vet before Saturday, but it's about a 20 minute drive and our other guinea pig also needs her next HCG injection on Saturday (she can't have it done any earlier) - my dad isn't keen on doing two trips due to working long hours. If needs be then he will.

I'm still keeping an eye on her anyway. Her wound has been very clean and healing perfectly, the vet even said it when we went for the first check so I don't know if it's me overreacting! If I tried to get a photo and post it here maybe you could tell me what you think? I know that doesn't substitute veterinary advice but it may give me more of an idea.

A good spay should not give you any trouble; my Cariad sailed through it despite being very low in weight. No issues with the wound. Could she be allergic to the suturing material or have a developing infection?

Hmm I'm not sure to be honest. She has been fine in herself, I've been checking the wound a few times a day and it hasn't been getting any worse. I thought it may have just been seroma (fluid filled swelling) which Is what someone else also suggested.

As long as she is fine in herself and her weight is stable, she should be OK until Saturday.

Ok thank you. - I've just taken this photo anyway, not the best and excuse my pj's.. as I said I've never experienced a spay with any animal so I'm not sure what is supposed to look or feel normal. How does it look to you?

I have two spayed sows who were both done this time last year - that looks ok to me xx

Thank you! I sent the photo to a vet nurse I'm friends with on Facebook and she said the same. As long as the wound stays closed and doesn't bleed/weep it's fine :)

Sorry just an update, we went for the last post op check yesterday and the look and feel of the wound is perfect :) I am a worry worm!

Perfectly natural -it shows you care

Beautiful piggy xx pleased she is all better - I told you so!

Fabulous news! All mine that have had ops have had a slight lumpiness feel to their wound as they healed, it is scar tissue I guess where the skin starts to rejoin, nothing to worry about unless there is redness, leaky fluid or a smell all of which would indicate infection. She is beautiful! :)

Thank you all, she is definitely my most photogenic piggie :) .. her wound is definitely feeling more normal now. Can't believe how fast it's healing! X
