Our old girl Midge (avatar piggy) is 5 1/2yrs. She is on long term septrin, metacam and nutracys for bladder problems. We recently found a lump under her chin the vet is about 75% sure its not a nasty but has mentioned abcess or swollen lymph gland. As well as these two problems she has developed a wet/crusty eye. The lump has increased in size within a couple of days so I'm hoping it is something easy to treat. He has said she may be resistant to the septrim so can anybody advise the best antibiotic for an abcess.

Sorry pressed submit before finishing post. Is it possible the lump is anything to do with the crusty eye. She is loosing a little bit of weight about 35g which we are monitoring it's just difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. She's back to the vets tomorrow for another check-up. A different vet so might get different ideas/thoughts. If anybody has got other thoughts I would be most grateful. xx

I can't really say, I'm sure someone else on here will have a possible answer, I'm sure your vet will get to the bottom of it.

I am sorry she is poorly :( The best antibiotic for skin/abscess issues is definitely Zithro-max. If you can try to get your vet to prescribe it. The abscess will probably need draining or removing though & I suspect that the size of it is putting pressure on the inside of the eye hence the weeping. I hope she is better soon :)

Thanks for that. We've had Zithromax prescribed for another piggy so hopefully the vet we're seeing will be open to the suggestion if it is an abscess.

Lots of healing vibes to Midge and hugs to you, keep us updated x

Healing vibes indeed will be sent to Midge tonight! If the lump is growing so quickly it sounds like it may be an abcess rather than something more sinister but of course I'm no vet! If she needs an op, then so be it- piggies can be resilient when they want, and she looks such a happy little pig I'm sure your tlc will help her get over whatever course of action the vet suggests. Fingers crossed for you!

Poor Midge, I second the recommendation for Zithromax, and I think that abcesses need to be flushed daily and kept open. Debbie should come on at some point and advise. The only abcesses I have any experience of have been related to tooth root problems.

Quick update on Midge. According to the vets records the lump hasn't increased in size - so that's good news. As for the problem eye she doesn't think its connected to the lump so has given Midge some ointment for it, she's had one dose already and there has been a marked improvement. As for the weight loss nothing majorly worrying as yet, monitor and critical care.. I'm hoping the weight loss was due to the painful eye and once that's sorted then hopefully the weight issue will sort itself out. So all in all not a bad day for Midge. Many thanks for all your good wishes. x
