Deb H
Adult Guinea Pig
poor little Barbra had blood in her urine today; we've been to the vet and she has a water infection. She's on Baytril and looks so sorry for herself.
Please check whether she is still eating and/or has mushy poos. Weigh her daily for the time being. Baytril can have an adverse effect on some piggies. Contact your vet asap if that is the case and ask for pediatric septrin instead; that is an oral form of the batrim mentioned in the link. What dose is she on?
You can help your girl by adding a pinch of probiotics to her veg in order to keep her guts going (avipro plus without additional calcium is available from the internet, or you can get p@h's brand if you need some asap).
You can also syringe additionally unsweetened cranberry juice, either pure or mixed with water; mild diuretics like cooled dandelion tea made by steeping fresh or dried dandelion in boiled water can also help with flushing out as many bacteria in the first couple of days.
Here is more information on UTI. Please be aware that UTIs can be very persistent and usually take about a three week course of fairly high dosed antibiotics to clear. If symptoms persist, have her x-rayed to exclude the presence of bladder stones or sludge.
