Hi All

As you all know I recently got Reggie a new friend back in October. At the time he was 6 weeks old and he was tiny.
He is growing rapidly so today i decided to weigh both the boys..

Ronnie now weighs a whopping 804g, I dont know about you but this seems to be quite heavy for such a young boy to me considering Reggie my older boy only weighs 812g.

Please let me know what you think as I have not really looked into weights before etc.

My hubby thinks it could be down to the breed he is as he is different to Reggie.

Thanks,

Stacey & the boys :)

According to your information, Ronnie was born roughly end of July/beginning of August, so that would make him about 5 months old now?

800g is a good weight for that age, rather at the top end of the range, but not unusually so. I have had a girl that hit the kilo at on her half year anniversary, but stopped grwoing quickly soon after and ended up with an average weight of 1200g.

Please be aware that Reggie is rather small for a boar - 800g is at the bottom end of what is considered a normal adult weight (800-1800g; 900-1400g being the average adult weight for guinea pigs). You may see dominance issues crop up as Ronnie is continuing to grow and having hormonal episodes over the next few months.

My experience of boar weights:
Theo 950g
Alvin(RIP) 1120
ralph(RIP)1300
Harry 1100g

Very varied as you can see but my initial thought was 800g was very small.

I always thought Reggie was quite small in comparison to other guinea pigs, especially my Aunties, hers are really big.
He has always eaten really well & has a brilliant appetite so do I need to be worried about his weight?

Or is there anything I can give him to help bulk him up a little?

I am going to keep weighing the boys weekly to see how they get on over the next few weeks.
x

Ive just bought some dried grass called JUST GRASS (quid for 15kg) its says its high in calories and my boys went bananas for it when I put some in this afternoon.

Where did you get that from hazeyg?
I think Ronnie sounds large for his age but otherwise healthy, probably gonna be a chunky fella! :))
My youngest out of all 4 weighs nearly 1.2kg and he's nearly 6 months! :o
Whereas my eldest at 2 years is 1.650kg!

I have never thought Reggie as being "underweight" before but since having Ronnie he is such a chunky monkey so its now got me thinking.

I really hope Reggie is okay though, i love my piggies very much and would do anything to ensure they are both healthy boys x

Is Reggie quite a small pig? My mums pig barney is very slim but he is a very small boar

Just to say I was asking someone the very same question recently. One of my boars is just over four months and weighs 682g. I was told this is on the smaller side but they don't stop growing for the first nine months.

He eats well, and he's happy in himself - I think perhaps just like people they are some of us who are just overall more petite than others even we eat the same diet. I guess there's a healthy weight category and whether they fall at the lower end or higher end it's all ok. Like humans! My weight barrier for my height at 5"9 is 9st10 - 12st7 - there's a huge difference there, 9st10 and I'm a size 6, 12st7 and I'm a size 16! But according to the science it's all healthy. I guess this is the same for all animals in general and it's an individuals metabolism, frame, etc that determines where you're going to rest in that catergory if you're eating a well balanced diet (obviously eating a bad diet and this is altogether a different issue).

I think - although someone correct me if I'm wrong - as long as they are gaining weight for the first year, and maintaining it after that, then that's just your piggies body and frame and the weight natural to them. The thing to be concerned about is if they start losing weight - for no apparent reason. Then I'd probably be heading to the vet.

After seeing my Aunties piggies grow up hers are massive so it does make me think Reggie is a petite one.
Also when I got Ronnie from the rescue she had a lot of adult pics which again all seemed very big.

Reggie is definetly not skin and bones, he feels fine to me and eats really well i guess he is just a small boy.

I really think Ronnie is going to be a big boy though.

This pic was only taken a few weeks ago and look how small Ronnie is there compared to Reggie lol...
