I just lost my 3 year old piggie this morning. Feel bad as realise he had heart failure and maybe could have done something. Took him to the vets a week ago as he was breathing rapidly and was given baytril. His appetite went so stopped the antibiotic after 5 days. Tried syringe feeding him yesterday, but he wasn't weeing and looked quite bloated. lethargic and ears quite purplish
Lost his other cage mate 2 months ago and got him a new little friend who i found this morning sitting on his dead body poor chap.
Can anyone recommend vet in West Kent as don't feel mine knows much about guineas

I am so sorry; losing a piggy to illness is always gutting.

Please see a vet asap whenever a piggy goes off food; they can go downhill very quickly. If necessary, you need to hand feed round the clock. Make sure that you have mushable pellets or some Critical Care powder handy.
Here are tips and details. http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

However, with heart failure, you are up against it; I have now lost two young seemingly healthy piggies to it within hours of the first symptoms showing and despite having them seen by my local vets as an emergency; one of them died during the examination.

PS: When your other boy comes out of deep mourning, you could book a boar dating slot at a reputable rescue to have him carefully rebonded with a boar he gets on with. it is really worth going the extra mile! I can especially recommend Crawley Guinea Pig Rescue for best practice. http://crawleyguineapigrescue.org/default.aspx

Yes i can't believe how quickly he went downhill. Only not eating on Friday and syringe fed him all day yesterday. He went very limp and wasn't weeing so maybe not much I could have done. The new boar is only 12 weeks, a bit of a handful but got on fine with my older one, even if a bit much for him. Hopefully won't be too hard to find him a friend. Got him from Pooh Piglet Rescue so will try there.
Yes have heard of Crawley Rescue

so sorry for your loss :(
i use trinity vets now they are near maidstone hospital
they are very good and recently saw them with my baby piggy as he has a broken leg, thats after another vet refused to treat him and misdiagnosed my daughters bunny who died less than 2 weeks later, thats when i found trinity, shame it came to late for my bunny but they were fantastic with my piggy

Heart Failure

Zorro
The same thing happened to me, I have just lost two litter
sisters one last night and the other this morning.
They stopped eating, went to vet put on Baytril and they
appeared to be starting to eat but still not with relish, now they
are gone. They were only a year old.
I have searched the net all day for reasons.
Food, bedding etc etc
I have a boar who is about two and he acted a little strange but
is now perky and eating well.

My vet did say she has seen a number of GPs recently more than
normal.

Sorry for your loss Zorro, a sad day here too.

Oh so sorry, loosing two together and so young, wonder what is was? My remaining one very confused . Take care x

Hi will remember to check out the vets near Maidstone. My problem is I work in London so often not home before the vets are shut

So sorry to hear about your boy Zorro.

I use Nicola Logan at Putlands in Paddock Wood, just outside of Tonbridge/Tunbridge Wells (they have a website if you google the name). There are numerous vets at Putlands but Nicola is cavy savvy (she has kept piggies for years) and a wonderful lady. If you decide to try them make sure you ask to see Nicola.

Mark Rowland at Trinity in Maidstone is also very good, he and a colleague are exotic specialists.

Sorry to hear of your loss, heart failure can be fast.

Another vet that I use for both my residents and the rescue piggies is Dacre Vets in Southborough (tunbridge wells)

If you would like to rehome another piggie there are two older single boys in East Peckham who would love a mate (these were two of the scabby boys from the Welsh rescue) and yes I can boar bond.

Sorry to hear about your piggie. Not all problems are fixable I'm afraid. Respiratory infections are frequently secondary to something else such as a tumour. So they will appear to improve for a little while on antibiotics, but then go downhill. Here is usually nothing to be done I am afraid, but vets will usually try baytril just in case it helps. I do have one guinea pig with mild heart failure on a diuretic doing very well, but she is the exception rather than the rule.

Wiebke. your guinea looks very like my remaining boy

He's a cutie then! My surprise baby Tegan is a longhaired youngster now and doesn't look anything like she did as newborn baby! I am looking forward to pics of him, and hopefully a new friend! A bit of an age difference may also help to get any boys safely through the hormonal months.

We also have a Rainbow Pet section, if you want to pay tribute to your lost boy.

Sorry to hear of your losses.
I have used Trinity Vets in Maidstone too; 30 mins away but worth it.
I got a friend for a lone boar from GBH rescue in Beckenham.

Oh Thanks, the new one has a bit of a tendency to nip.Didn't nip the other one but does me. Think it is probably the smell of food but it does hurt. Any tips?
