Morning all :)

One of my pigs, Woolly, has been diagnosed with a dodgy heart, about ten days ago. She is currently on Frusemide to reduce the fluid on her heart, lungs and bulgy belly and we finally seem to have the dosage right so she's starting to lose weight (a quarter of a 20mg tablet four times daily).

My question is about heart drugs. My vet has done some research but has not found any she's happy to recommend yet. The rescue lady I got the pigs from (Wendi at Thistle Cavies) has suggested I ask for Fortekor. Have any of you used heart drugs with pigs? What doses? What were the results? I'm interested in both good and bad experiences, I want a balanced view :)

If you have used heart drugs with pigs to good effect, if you're happy to do so please would you let me have details of your vet so I can let my vet know so she can get in touch?

Thanks very much :)

Hi there
I've had a piggy on heart medication recently. She was also on furosemide diuretic.

My vet is very good with guinea pigs, her name is Anne and she works at Goddard Vets in Ewell.

My guinea was also prescribed vetmedin for her heart which help a lot. But obviously every guinea is different so I wouldn't like to say this would definitely work for your guinea (I'm no vet). But if your vet wanted a second opinion/help then I'm sure Anne wouldn't mind helping.

Thanks PopcornPigs :)

I was able to ask the vet yesterday which drugs she had researched and Vetmedin wasn't one of them, so that's one to add to the list. We've to go back for a check up in a couple of weeks so we can talk heart drugs then. Others she's looked at are Enalapril (Vasotec, Enaladex, Enacard), Benazepril (Fortekor, Lotensin, Vetace) and Imidapril (Tanatril).

Any more heart drug experiences anyone can share?
