Hi

I have a heart piggy and have posted before but I have some new advice..

He has been on Furoesmide 0.2m twice daily, but the symptoms have come back so I took him to the vet and he's now been increased to 0.3ml twice daily, he's also been started on an ace inhibitor called Imidapril, vet doesn't want to increase dosage of that

The concern is that, obviously where the diuretics have been increased, he's loosing more fluid and has now lost weight, so he's gone from 1.35 kg to 1.26kg.. the vet is concerened that he will lose more weight so doesn't want to increase furosemide any more.

My worry is if he loses more weight, his fureosmide will be decreased and then the symptoms will get worse

I wondered if any one else had similar problems with managing medications for symptoms and weight management?

Thanks

@Ali_x How old is your piggy?

Is the vet certain that the weight loss is due to the diuretic?

I've had a few pigs in diuretic long term and any weight loss that they had wasn't associated with the med's.

At 1.26kg I wouldn't worry as that is a good weight, it's normal for a boar.

My vet thought it was beneficial for my boys to lose a little bit as it makes them a bit more agile and helps them breathe and move around easier.

He's 1 years old and eats loads, so I'm not concerned that he's not eating enough.

He does feel lighter to pick up now, but looking at it, it's not a huge weight drop, she just said she wouldn't want him to lose any more, he is urinating a lot more than before now he's furos has been increased

I think I'd monitor it a little longer and see how he goes. Hopefully he'll stabilise soon.

I have a boy at the moment who has been losing weight. He has digestive absorption issues. The vet was reluctant to suggest syringe feeding him as he is eating fine an so I've increased his pellet portion a little, I've slowly introduced grass to his diet and he also gets some time on his own with hay. He's stopped losing weight for now.

If your boy gets to about 1.2kg or lower maybe that would be something to try?
