Hi everyone,

please bare with me, I'm not sure where to start....

I posted on here about our two baby guinea pigs a few weeks ago. I had bought them from p@h and they were suffering from an URT infection. They had antibiotics and I looked after them to the very best of my ability, and they seemed to be making good progress. Unfortunatly, the story didn't end there :(

Freda, who is the bigger girl is generally eating, pooing etc fine. I noticed that she had a small scabby area behind her ear so decided I had better take her back to the vet. Also, Flo, who weighs considerably less needed a trip too. I was getting increasingly concerned as her left eye seemed to be bulging out. I thought I was imagining it to begin with, but it has become more and more noticeable over the last few days. So I took them down on Tuesday to the vet. He said that Freda's skin patch was just a small wound that she had probably caught it on a little twig in her cage, and just keep an eye on it. Flo however, has glaucoma and is blind in that eye. The pressure is building up, but he does not think it appropriate to operate, as she is so small. He said it may rupture and reheal itself, which apparently would be the best option, and he said as long as she is eating/drinking/pooing then she isn't in pain. So, going by that, she is apparently not in pain, but it looks awful.

This morning, Fredas skin had worsened. Her ear was looking sore and had begun to bleed a little. Some of the fur has been rubbed off the back of her ear. I rang the vets and took her straight back down. He said she probably has mites, and has treated her for that. He said to keep an eye on the sores and if they don't heal up or look more sore, to take her back again. Flo on the other hand, is not looking too good. He said it looks likely her eye problem is congenital, and in time, will probably affect her other eye too. She is completely bling in her left eye. He felt it would be more kind to have her pts in the long term. She is only a baby, and probably will go through a lot of oain with these eyes, whether or not i put her through the surgery. She is so loving, and so beautiful, and we are so attatched to both these little piggies. I can't bare to see them suffering, and can't bare the thought of making that decision to say goodbye to Flo.

On top of all of this, completely unrelated, I have cancer and am going through Chemo. I'm a single mum, and have been desperate for a pet to have with my daughter for quite some time. That time just didnt ever seem right until now. It seems all so unfair, and my poor daughter is finding it hard, knowing that mummy is poorly, and now she can't have the cuddles with the piggies that she so desperately wants, because they are poorly too :(

I went to p@h today, and all credit, they were lovely. They refunded all the vets bills, and the cost of the piggies. They said any further treatment will also be paid for, and they were very apologetic. I know they are rubbish in so many ways, but this goes a little way to help us through this.

I'm so so sad about Freda and Flo, both of them suffering, and both of them so young. I'm so cross that they were too small and young to be taken away from their mum (not something i realised at the time) and that in this short amount of time, they have both experienced illness and pain.

xx

OH honey, how awful very sorry to hear of your perosnal problems also, I would recommend seeking another vet who is experienced in piggies, if you could give us your location we may be able to recommend a vet to you. To be honest pigs dont have any hair directly behind their ears anyway. If possible could you post pics for us to see.

Big hugs, keep strong. xx

I'm sorry to hear that you're having such a rubbish time!

Are you confident in your vets ability to treat guinea pigs? A lot of vets sadly aren't all that experienced with them, however we have a list of recommended vets if you feel that you wanted a second opinion about the eye or anything else. If you tell us where you are in the country, we could point you in the direction of a cavy savvy vet if that's the route you wanted to go down.

Also, we aren't just here for piggy stuff! Not being a parent myself, I can' even imagine how tough things are for you at the moment. We're all friends on here, and we've all received great support for something or other from other members, so if you ever need a talk/laugh/rant/whatever, there's the "general chat" area of the forum if you haven't already expored that far!

Hugs to you all, keep us updated on the girls. Sorry I can't offer any more advice regarding their situation.

What an awful situation to be in :( I agree with toffeewoffee, I'd find a vet who's more experienced with guinea pigs. I really hope they recover soon.

Please give us our location; it sound rather like Freda has most likely got a fungal problem and I would have Flo's eye seen by a preferably piggy savvy (exotics) vet!

I am sorry about your ongoing problems.

So sorry for all you are going through - sending you all big hugs xx

I'm so sorry to hear your girls have not made significant improvements, I remember your previous thread :(
I cannot imagine why a vet would recommend having Flo PTS ?/ :... Piggies can live normal lives with limited or no sight if you have the knowledge (basic common sense) I have a girl who had an 'eye injury' and the vet said it could have been caused by a hay poke before we had her - she disagreed with my instincts that it was congenital but I swear she is now blind in one eye. I also believe one of my older boars has the iminent signs of bilateral cataracts :... Life for Phoebe is perfectly normal atm - she's the first into everything, food, hay etc. and is the nosiest and most inquisitive of them all. She loves to sit on my hand when I'm poop scooping etc. and wheeks her head off when I walk into the room - she must recognise my smell ;). Chopper, our boy has a comfy lifestyle (albeit being acutely pampered) I don't move his dishes, hay buckets etc. around so he doesn't get confused and just take precaution with him. Piggies have an acute sense of smell so can survive very well even if blind :)

I would do as others have suggested, get another vet opinion - I'm shocked at his suggestion of euthanasia...?/
Really hope things pick up for you and please keep us updated x>>

A bulging eye can be cause by an infection behind the eye and not just glaucoma. It is well worth getting a second opinion!

PS: I have and had several cataract piggies over the years, and once they had adjusted to the loss of their sight, they were perfectly fine and got on with their life as well a fully sighted piggy. My current top sow of the OAP group has advanced cataracts and pretty much no sight apart from light/dark, but that doesn't stop her from running a group of six!
