I have a female guinea pig that is due babies any day now. Once yesterday and once today I noticed her making a strange noise and she looked as if she was about to get sick. Her whole body was jumping forward. I know guinea pigs can't get sick, and I have read that these heaving hiccups are just to clear a blockage. I was in the vets yesterday with my other pig and i said it to her and she didnt seem to know alot about it. I am just a bit worried as she is pregnant and due very soon.

Hello

I can understand why you are concerned - the heaving hiccups are scary in a pregnant pig!

Labour is very similar, the heaves strong and regular, just a few, and then mum will put her head down between her legs to pull the baby out. This link gives info on the birth.

If your other pig is a male please do not leave him in with her any longer. A female can concieve very shortly after giving birth and back-to-back pregnancies are very stressful on her body - having nutured one set of babies to be feeding and nuturing another is an enormous load to place on her.

If you could pop any further posts in the pregnancy section, as experienced members monitor it for members and piggies in need.

My Guinea Pig had two gorgeous babies this morning!:)) one male and one female and one is an albino!
everything went well and the babies are fine! thanks for your help! I have the male separated...poor thing is very upset on his own!
Thanks again!

congratulations :) you will be able to put the two boys together when the little one grows up a bit :)

Aw, welcome little ones and well done mum :)p
These hiccups you mentioned are so scary - my sow had a slither of fresh beetroot the other morning and starting lurching. OMG - all hell broke loose. I was shaking and sweating, preparing to grab the little monkey and do CPR mallethead :(|) when she coughed and charged back to her veggie dish :x
At least now if it ever happens to any of my piggies again, I'll stay calm and delay my cardiac arrest ;)

I know!I got such a fright!she got the hiccups a good bit while she was pregnant, but the heaving hiccups were bad!
All are doing great!sooo cute!:)) :)) I feel terrible for the poor male but I'm trying to keep him as happy as possible!:(
