Hedgehogs in my garden.

Hi everyone.

Quick summer related question if I may.

I’ve got 3 girls I intend to put outside in a Bluebell hutch during the day and in a covered run when I’m about at the weekend or early evenings.

While cleaning up the garden a few weeks ago I noticed a hibernating hedgehog.

I put everything back as I found it so as to not disturb it any more but my question is, now it’s probably woken up, will it return to my garden?

If so will it’s toilet and living here affect my pigs health by being on the on the lawn?

Thoughts and advice please from those who might know?

My garden isn’t very big and to be honest, the area I live in isn’t where I’d expect to see a hedgehog!

Obviously I’ll let nature take its course the next few weeks but at the same time I don’t want to risk my pigs health.

I have also asked this on a uk Facebook group but I want your thoughts as well.
 
We have hedgehogs in our garden. In fact we have counted 4 in total at once. We have one in our hedgehog box at the moment which is out every night pooping in the garden. Our two piggies spend a large amount of time out on our lawn in their run and have not had any problems.

We have a night camera in the hedgehog feeding house, it takes hundreds of photos some nights if it’s busy! We have a little mouse that comes to eat the hedgehog food too, he is back this year again. Will post some more soon, once I get Ted sorted, the mouse lives under the summerhouse!
 
That’s an ace photo!
The hoggie may have been in the garden last year and I never knew.

But I wanted to be sure their toilet wouldn’t affect my piggies as I now know about it this year.

Anyone who has a hedgehog in their garden is very, very lucky these days. Hedgehogs numbers are diminishing - unfortunately!

We have hedgehogs in our garden who live under our sheds or just pass through during the night. We had many more years ago but just a few now.

Sadly, we found one dead under our bird table last night. We knew he/she lived under our gardening shed as he/she had a distinctive back leg and hurried back under there.

I always think of hedgehogs as being similar to guinea pigs - just prickly and sleep at night 🙂
 
Oh my goodness... love the pics. I used to have African Pygmy hedgehogs as pets. I love the little guys! Unfortunately there are no hedgehogs native to North America, so I will never see a wild one here.

The camera is a “mynaturewatch” home assembled, based on a raspberry pi processor. You order the parts and assemble yourself. You downdown the program. Link is mynaturewatch.net is the project website, it’s a motion activated infra red LED camera x you need to be a bit of a geek, but once you get it sorted it’s great x

Thanks. I’m a bit of a technophobe so I might look for something a bit simpler...:mal:
 
We have hedgehogs in the garden as well. But I haven't seen them for a long time. I only know they're still there because of their poops and the food is get eaten. Last summer hubby bought another hedgehog house but one only stayed there a few days and probably moved back to one of the old houses which was covered more.
