Helllllllo! :)p I am new to GP`s and i got 12 weeks old boars on sat, now i have been doing alot of reading of what to and not to feed them but I'm just not sure how much food to give them.

Any advice will be greatly appriciated!

Thanx Stacey, Winne,Tigger & Piglet! :)

Hiya!

In terms of dry food you need a guinea pig specific food such as burgess or wagg (plain pellets are better than museli as they stop picky eating and make sure that they are getting everything they need). I give young ones unlimited pellets whilst they are growing then give them a handful or so each a day. That said, all of mine do have access to pellets all day. Some people will tell you to limit them, others will say unlimited is okay - it all depends on what you want to do and what your pigs like!

They need unlimited hay (meadow, timothy, etc) and when they are fully grown this should make up about 80% of their diet. They should be eating lots of it!

Veggie wise, here is a list of what they can have:

1 cup of mixed veggies a day per pig.

Hope that helps! :)

Thank you for replying! :)

i have been giving them a cabbage leaf, some kale,1 good size carrott, 2 baby tomatoes (but they dont seem to eat them) they have unlimted hay and they have a burgess pellet food.

does that seem enough fresh food? x

Hi! I would recommend that you include some high vitamin C food every day, either a slice of pepper of any colour, some broccoli or a bit of parsley or coriander. Try a mix of veg, about a handful per piggy per day. Carrot and Romain/Cos lettuce are very high in vitamin A which builds up in the liver over time, so they should not be given daily.

You may find that your piggies won't eat everything at the frirst attempt; just persevere. The more you get them to eat now, the easier your life later!eaten food lying for a day then remove it and serve again on another day.

That does sound okay to me! You might want to try different things to increase the variety of what they're getting, but it's definitely a start! As they're quite young you want to introduce new things in very small quantities, and not all at once to minimise the chance of them getting upset tummies.

Wiebke mentioned high vit c veggies and pepper. Mine prefer red pepper more than any colour (I dont know how different they taste as I don't eat them!) so you could try that? It's VERY popular with most of mine.

:D

i will pop to the co op 2moz then and get some peppers and broccoli. they have a fridge section that they put food in thats due to go out of date so i could have a look in there see what they have, if i do it daily they will get variaty and it wont cost as much lol x

Thank you for the info Jinnywig, i have bookmarked it so i can refere back to it.

i cannot wait to go get more yummies now! :<>

I went shopping! I picked up Cress,Peppers,Broccoli,Cucumber and some green leafy stuff which the name has totally gone out of my brain! rolleyes

I can tell you what I feed mine and if you have any questions please ask
[*]dry food[/*]
burgess excel guinea pig nuggets (1/4 cup each)
woodlands guinea pig food and forage (1/2 cup between 2)

i feed them nuggets because they are selective feeders which means they pick out their favourite parts of the food and aren't getting all the nutrition and usually the good bit so its eaasier to give them nuggets which is basicly meusli compressed.
Burgess excel is one of the best makes in the Uk- thats just my opinion

[*]hay[/*]
I feed mine meadow hay, the greener the better according to my guinea pigs.
hay should be unlimited. its good for their teeth and digestive system.

[*]vegetables[/*]
you can find a list of safe and unsafe veg online but some ive tried are
brocolli, parsley, lettuce (NOT iceberg), carrots, celery, baby corn, cucumber, grapes(not often one a week each), bananna, apple, I'm sure there are other but thats all i can think off the top of my head

hope this helps a little
