Hello...q about hutch size

Hiya,

Firstly, just want to say how fab this forum is! 8) I'm not much of a piggie expert....but having taken on 5 bonded females (fostering from a rescue..but then became too attached to give them back : ;D)...I'm quickly learning each day!


Anyway, I'm just wondering what you guys would think is good sized housing for a bonded group of 5 bonded females?

I'm semi new too, isn't this forum fabulous?! I've learnt quite a bit about more than my gp's already

I've got a double storey hutch that I bought from Pets At Home - cost me £90 last year - and that has two gps and a dwarf rabbit in it and still plenty more room! It's just over a metre long and about 40/50cm wide I think.

A double storey 4 foot hutch would be great for your piggies or even a 5 preferably a 6 foot long by 2 foot deep would also work out nicely for them, I wouldn't go any smaller than that.

100cm x 40 /50 cm is not really big enough for a group of 5 adult piggies I am afraid.

When you put it like that I think my hutch must be bigger than 100cm....! It's from the Scratch & Newton company so quite a good make......they do larger ones as well and hutch huggers for winter.

A 100 cm hutch is 3 foot wide 40 cm is a narrow hutch at 16 inches, 50 cm is 20 inches. If you measure your hutch up you probably will discover it is actually bigger than you think it is.

I oversee the guinea pig side of a rescue in Twickenham and like all the other rescues in our area will not rehome a pair of piggies to a hutch less than 4 foot (120cm) by 2 foot (60 cms). Pairs of boys ideally need more space than that.
