Hello! When were you Piggie-Smitten?

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and am enjoying myself so far!

I just wondered how people came to own and love their pigs. To be honest, I'd never thought about guinea pigs as a pet - I wanted a cat and my husband wanted hamsters. We talked about it and decided to compromise on either a rabbit or guinea pig. I did a bit of research and decided on a guinea pig, and we brought 6 week old boar Cobweb home.

Well....

I never knew pigs could be so cute - those little faces and the little hands on the sides of the bowl! The fact that their little faces are so expressive - from looks of curiousity (what have you got for me?) to looks of downright disdain (and what is this you think you're giving me?). 7 months later and Cobweb and I have a great relationship - he loves his cuddles and I think he is the most handsomest piggie ever!

I am now utterly smitten and have since acquired Pigpig, a baby boar. I can't imagine not having pigs in my life now! :smitten:

I'd like to know about you - have you had pigs since childhood or you are newish proud parents (like me?)

Hi there! :) I new ish to this forum too and it lovely! :D I started my piggie obsession really early in my life, when for my 5th birthday I got Siouxsie, a cousin girl pig had a litter and Siouxsie was the only girl, so my parents decided I should learn to look after animals and I got Siouxs! Then cos she was lonely, we got Fluffy a few weeks later. Fluffy died when I was 12 and Siouxsie when I was 13... she was nearly 9yrs! I had a little gap, and then after leaving school, I got Charlie (he my avatar!) and he kicked up my piggie obssesission... after that I bred three times and then took in rescvues and unwanted piggies ::) ::) Got up to 52 at one point 98) 98) Must be obsessed! 98) I now have alot of elderly piggies and am down to 30! But I adore my piggies and couldn't envisage a life without them in it! :smitten: :smitten: I am allowing numbers to fall naturally at the moment, as I have a young dog, but I know if I hear the words "I have a piggie I can't look after....." I will be there like a shot!
 
Hi petticoat74! Charlie's gorgeous! Wow, Siouxsie was a grand old dame - that's amazing!

52 pigs! I must admit, if I ever won the lottery, I would open a piggie rescue.. and probably spent the days grinning madly! ;D
 
I'm a very new piggie lover. My husband came home just a few weeks ago (just before my 30th birthday) saying that one of his colleagues was moving house and looking to re home her piggie. At first my husband said NO! But when he came home at lunch telling me I was awwww we could have a guinea pig if it's kept in a hutch outside (we've no room inside with our hamster and zebra finch) So told him to not say an outright yes but to ask a few questions, like how old, how easy to keep etc. I've never had a guinea pig before.

By the end of the week we were off to get our piggie!

He is just gorgeous and the rate I'm going, he's going to be well spoiled, I just love him to bits!

Learning as I go along really but he's not as hard to look after as I imagined. Now with hindsight, I'd have chosen a guinea pig as a first pet for our kids instead of a hamster. My piggie still isn't keen on my kids (they are 5yrs and 7yrs) cause they are a bit too noisy and quick for him) but I'm sure he'll get used to them, they certainly like him.
 
flm1977, ah yes, I'm learning as I go too. I know what you mean about the kids - Cobweb was very nervous of them at first (I have a 4 and 8 year old) but now he's not bothered at all. :)
 
Mine sort of crept up on me really! We've not long become home owners after renting for ages, so we decided we really wanted some pets to share our home with. The neighbours at the bottom of our house obviously owns a pig cos you would (and still do) hear it wheeking like mad when you're out in the garden, and it brought back memories of the piggie we had when we were little...so i started doing some research...and i suppose the rest is history!

We've only had our pigs just under 2 weeks, but it feels as if they've been around forever! Can't imagine life without them :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Your piggies look lovely - I take it one of them is called Teabag, what a brilliant name for a piggie! ;D
 
I'd always got the job of looking after nursery/school guinea pigs.But remember looking after the school's piggy when i was about 8yrs old,i wasn't allowed a pet because dad was in the army and we moved ALOT!So was not practical.Became a nursery nurse and always got the job of caring for the class pets.But got my 3,pictured left! from friend who had 3 guinea pigs,so I got the 2girls Piglet & Fizzi then acquired the half brother Boris when other friend no longer could care for him! Out of the 3 there was one mum had 3 girls and other mum had boy&girl and then dad, my 3 are the only ones left!

Your piggies are lovely - I like their markings, very cute! Piglet is a GREAT name for a piggie!
 
I have always been an animal lover and whilst at uni took on a rabbit that a friend of a friend couldn't look after anymore. It was a natural progression when we got our own house to more rabbits and cats and last but most certainly not least, Laska (I was reading Anna Karenina at the time!) was given to me a year and three quarters ago. She was my first pig and I got her a friend (who was pregnant in the shop :tickedoff:) so Radish gave birth to Carrot and Parsnip. I just recently adopted Elvis and my piggy love is blossoming! Its great to be able to come to this forum and get help and advice, but also just to talk to other people that are as delighted on a daily basis with their babies as I am!

I too joined this forum primarily for help and advice but also because I wanted to be able to chat with other people about the wonder of piggie-ness too, just mainly because my family look at me as though I am mad when I'm talking to/about my pigs! They're not quite as smitten as I am ;D
 
i've always been an animal lover too! :smitten: i started the whole guinea crazy thing about 5 years ago and have never looked back! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: my piggies are my life, i never want to be without them. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-* :-*

Good guess! Yes, hes the brown/tan one, maxi is the girl. She's very slim and pretty. Teabag is a real hulk of a guinea pig, he totally dwarfs her! Got a dead cute button nose tho :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
 
When I went over to my cousins to see the piggies and she pulled out little Tillly Fluff. She was a tiny ball of fur with 2 eyes and that was it for me :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I've always had animals around since I was a child, a dog, then cats, a budgie and fish! I love animals, and when we moved into a flat where animals (except fish) weren't allowed I really missed having a furry pet :'( Then we bought our house and got the piggies! ;D (I have a 4 year old large goldfish too, who survived the move - I was worried he wouldn't.)

I love the name Ickle Pickle! I sometimes call my children Pickle and I call my niece Kitten (pet names, not their real ones lol!)

Cobweb was also a tiny fluffy thing when I first got him - he looked more mouse than guinea! Now he's a big (much loved) lump!
 
I've always loved animals and we had 2 cats and 2 dogs when I was younger. My mum used to take the cats out walks with the dogs. I got piggies because my M.E became loads worse and I'm not at school so I was reading about piggies and my mum decided I could get one. So one day we were comming back from hospital and we went into a pet shop looking for a sow but then I saw Misty who is a boar and got him. Then after that I ended up with another 3 :D
 
Hi lolseh :)

Pigs ARE addictive, aren't they? I would have lots more if I had the space...

Mind you, when the kids eventually move out there'll be a spare room... ;D
