I have a 5 month old Male guinea pig. He was running around this morning being his squeaky self. I left the house for a bit and when I came back he was laying on the bottom of his cage and was shallowly breathing. All the vets in our area are closed and there have been messages left. I picked him up and he was cold and limp.

A few times he would try and move but his head was very wobbly and he couldn't get his feet under him. I got him on a heat pad and read a few forums that recommended sugar water as he may have low blood sugar. He has perked up a bit and is now on his own feet and showed interest in the water and spinach. What are some suggestions for low blood sugar in guinea pigs? Is there something in a supplement I should be given them that I am not?

Thank you

That doesn’t sound like low blood sugar to me, I have never heard of that in piggies at all.

how is he now? Did you get to a Vet

It's more likely that the heat perked him up.
Low blood sugar is a symptom not an illness as such. I hope you have managed to get him to a vet this morning

Please have your piggy seen by a vet. It’s not a good idea to attempt to self-diagnose and treat - only a vet is going to be able to tell you what is actually wrong with your piggy and medicate appropriately

With a good quality hay based diet, and a small amount of veg and pellets, piggies don’t usually require any additional supplements unless a vet diagnoses a medical problem .

None are open until tomorrow and he is acting normal if not a little tired. I am constantly watching him and have no clue what happened.

Absolutely. I do not want to self diagnosis. We have no vets available till tomorrow and I have left messages with all surrounding us so just waiting to hear back.

Worse case I'll just show up in the morning tomorrow

I would call in the morning as soon as they’re open and try to get an appointment. If you’re in the UK then have a look at our vet locator list.
