Hi, we have one of these (pictured below) in the piggie room and in floor time I saw gnocchi at the tail end of munching a dried leaf from it that fell on the floor. What is the plant and is it safe to eat?!?

I can’t help with the identification of the plant but I hope someone comes along soon who will be able to help. Such naughty piggies.

I'm not sure what the plant is but if you download an app like PlantNet it should be able to tell you. Then you can hopefully find out if it's safe. Either way I'd expect one leaf shouldn't do any harm, just monitor if you're worried :)

Is that a poinsettia? Did it have red leaves/flowers?

As you don’t know what it is, I would err on the side of caution and take it as they can’t eat it. Just keep an eye on said piggy and get them to the vet if you see any change in behaviour etc.

PS I don’t have a clue what it is I’m afraid.

I started investigating house plants as the Guinea Pig Magazine wanted an article on what piggies could eat. It would be a very short article as I didn't find a single plant they could eat unless it was a food plant grown on a windowsill.
They are all not piggy food, but some are worse than others - eg a pine in the house at xmas can be munched a bit but any bulbs plants are really poisonous.

If your piggy hasn't eaten much then they will hopefully be fine. You would see a change fairly quickly and as you posted 6 hours ago the piggy should be showing any affects. Just to be certain, please pick them up and put their side to your ear, you should hear digestion gurgling noises and as long as they are there then all should be well.

And if there are any piggy slaves who haven't held a piggy to their ear then please do this. You will then know what good breathing and good digestion sounds like.

Hugs to Gnocchi

Thanks everyone you are completely right its

POINSETTIA.
So Gnocchi is eating and running about and has been pretty happy all day except for erm me waking him up when he's all relaxed to check he's still alive...

Thank you so much Sarah. We have moved all the leafy plants from that sill now. IMG_20210414_233318_564.webp

Wow! I can't believe that Gnocchi ate them. Those leaves and stem are so familiar to me as we had so many of them growing up.
