Hello!

I'm a new forum member, owner of 7 females!

Really desparate for some advice really and thats how i came across this site.

Ed (4 years old) start to lose weight rapidly over the past few weeks. I also noted her drinking loads more. Took her to my usual vet who have always been good in the past. They gave her worming stuff and took bloods to be sent away. Thw worming stuff upset her stomach so we had to go back, we stopped that one dose from the end and start syringe feeding critical care. The vet got the tests back a week later and sad there was nothing unusual, she was also checked for diabetes which was negative. The nly area on the blood test that was slight high was the things indicating inflammation in the body but not due to an infection. The vet then said i think its the teeth so she went n yesterday to have them looked and and sorted. When i went ot pick her up, the vet said she couldn't see anything wrong but had filed them down a bi just to make sure. they have said there is nothing more they can do for her now.

I'm positive there is something going on with her teeth/mouth. She is extremely slow with the food she is eating, and only eating soft stuff. I've been pureeing her food and she just seems ot be really struggling to chew and swallow. She has stayed bright and seems to be absolutely famished everytime i offer her food. i'm feeding her as much as i can ad the weight loss has reduced slightly but is still very concerning...

Really interested in anyones thoughts on what to do next.......

What area are you in? you must find a vet that knows how to treat piggies.Panacur is a waste of time and in this case has made the piggy worse.I am sure this is a dental problem, the slow eating and chewing, and the excess drinking all point to overgrown teeth or a molar spur. Her mouth needs to be checked asap.In the meantime cut the softer veggies like cucumber, celery leaves, etc into matchstick slithers and put them into her mouth from the side, push them gently onto the back teeth. She may be able to chew them, but do not force the slithers in.Grind up some of the dry mix to a fine powder and mix with the Critical Care, also mix in a couple of teaspoonfuls of baby puree. The potato and carrot is favourite,or potato and sweetcorn. The banana and rice is good as well. This will provide a near normal diet.Hope you will be able to find a good vet soon. Mary

awww, really does sound like the teeth. A while back my Tonni broke his teeth (not saying this is what it is), and we grated all his favourite foods for him to eat.

How about syringing some of pureed food into her mouth?

Hope she gets better soon :smitten:

I'm in cornwall, I text the CCT and the nearest recommended place for a piggy to be treated is Reading! Hmmmmm......

Thanks for the advice, i have been syringe feeding pureed food but shes getting v stroppy with the syringe. I'm feeding from the side and giving her time to chew, all the stuff thats recommended but its proving a real struggle. She's also been on the baby food really lapping that up. I think i might try phoning round some other vets and seeing if they can help. I'm on my second vet now and thought they were a good one but they have said there is nothing wrong with her teeth!! or anything else!

My vet in Surrey would be nearer than Reading,I think, but still too far to go.This vet situation is disgusting,no-one should have to search around like this to get decent care for a sick animal. Mary

Many of us are in that situation, and I agree - it's disgusting! Taken me years to finally find a good one!

Not getting too excited but ed has started to try and eat broccoli and greens this morning! taking her a bit of time but she persisting!

Hi and welcome :) :)
I've not got a girl but a boy.
He's had many teefie probs so if you're even a teensy bit in doubt please ask the vet, as i've learnt the hard way.. it's so hard to deal with it's an on going problem. I'm hoping (paws crossed) that we may go longer than a few weeks as it's stressful for the furbaby.
Good luck keep us posted, we've all been thru this at some stage and can help with food ideas etc...
Come on Ed and your beautiful sisters don't upset your mummy eat please :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

The things we do for our piggies - i'm just about to embark on a trip from cornwall to see Jenny the vet recommended in Reading, luckily they could fit me in today so I'm over the moon! Luckily parents live on the south coast so can stay there this weekend!

maybe a mouth infection daktarin gel is used for this Vedra told me last week for dobbys mouth infection or it could be if the teeth were slightly over grown they could have casued an ulcer or sore patch on the tongue , try hipp organic baby food for a different option if critcal care is slightly rough the dose for daktarin is 0.5ml 3 times a day for a week and then 2 a day for 2nd week and finally a single dose for 3rd week, good luck

Bit of an update,

Saw Jenny the vet in Reading yesterday with eddie, she was brill, took a long time to have a look in her mouth and said she thinks its a tooth root problem but couldn't be sure without x rays. She said she would treat it if it was this problem and gave me antibiotics and painkillers for eddie for a month. Her teeth were also filed down as they were uneven due to her eating on one side.

One day later Eddie has really brightened up and is now attempting to eat all food including hard dry stuff! The painkillers are obviously worknig and allowing her to eat!

Woo hoo if only my local vets could come to this conclusion!

Great news... lets hope she makes a full recovery and starts putting the weight back on now :) Well done you for spotting the problem and getting her seen by an expert.

Jenny is a fantastic vet and a lovely person, isn't she. She does all my rescue rescue piggies for me :) Perhaps she can have a chat with your vet via phone/email so you don't have so far to travel. Please give feedback to your vets- Jenny was new to this at one time :) Now she's spreading the word about dental treatment and x-rays without anaesthetic to other vets (up North I think though).

Find a vet at your practise that might be interested in this and go from there, slowly and gently does it but feedback, feedback feedback :D is sooo important. Tell them you have found the cause and it was this ... Next time they may phone Jenny with a few symptoms and ask her thoughts on it.

Oh, and glad you have found an answer by the way :) But I'm sure you know that its probably not the end of it all if it is a tooth root prob ::) Keep us posted.
