A freiend of mine has got 2 guinea pigs that are about 4/5 months old. They are indoor pigs and are well looked after. My freind brought Chester round today as he wasnt looking very good, I noticed that he had a very small scab inside his lip. He was very quite and didnt put up a fuss when he was held, when we put I'm back in his box he just lied on his side. He was pooing but I gave him 0.3 ml of calpol, told my freind to make sure she gave him tiny bits of water and gave her a heat pad. She was going to take him to the vets in the morning. She has just rang me to say that he smells and has some sort of puss coming from his bottom and is cold. She has made sure that he is warm but says that he dosent look good. Could any one tell me what this could be as he is housed with his brother. She cant get to the vets till morning.

Mary

I hate to say it but if he is collapsed like this it is highly unlikely he will make it through the night without emergency vet treatment. It could be stasis or a blocked intestine or any other number of things. Depending on what it is it may or may not effect his brother. That said I have known a lot of poorly pigs recently in various places who have lived with other pigs who have not been ill at all.

He needs to be kept warm, comfortable and quiet and if at all possible to the vets asap.

Keep us informed.

Thanks for the advice but what is stasis, she will get him to the vets first thing in the morning but she did say that she dosent think he will make it. Feel really bad as its one of my rescues and shes my best mate, Will keep you all informed

Stasis is when the gut stops working basically - an injection can get it going again but the outlook is generally poor.

Is it one of the brothers of Zippy and Georgie who came to me?

Will be thinking of you and your friend and the poor little man tonight.

this sounds so sad :'(

Yes its Zippy and George's brother, how are they all and little Albert and Bob? What would course this to happen and would that mean a puss like discharge from his bottom

Zippy and Georgie went to a new home in Scotland last week. Bob and Albert are still here and doing well although Bob's sore turned in to a really nasty abcess but he is all healed up now.

Could the puss like stuff be very bad runs? Otherwise it sounds like he has had some kind of rupture. Poor little chap.

fingers crossed for him poor little mite keep us updated please love to the little man :smitten:, sounds quite serious, hope not

I dont think its the runs, will let you know tomorrow as I'm at the vets in the morning when Chester will be coming in.

Goodness me Scotland! Thats along way to come, bless them. Will let you know if its some thing that is passed on in their genes as you will want them to know. Glad that Bob is sorted out now, at least they have a good home before their forever home comes along.
Will update you tomorrow.

This does not sound at all good, He needs to get to a vet assp,(like now) if he is to stand the slightest chance.
Good Luck

Chester didnt make it :'( Will find out more later.
So gutted, didnt think I wolud feel so bad about one of my rescues. Please give all your pigges an extra hug and kiss from me

The vet said it might have been the veg he had. Sidney has had a full health check and is fine. Poor Sidney is now on his own so my friend is going to wait a few weeks to see what she is going to do.

it gave them the major poo's ( cant spell the dia word lol)
and it was too late by the time we got to them,i seriously refuse to allow cabbge anywhere near them now, theres a couple of people said that about it too, weird

That's awful about little Chester. I keep reading about people losing their piggies and I'm dreading the day I lose one of mine. What's this about cabbage? I always feed my boys savoy cabbage, shall I stop? I'd hate to give them anything that would harm them.

mine only eat greens I dont give them any other cabbage, was it just major diareah that killed him, if you had got some probiotics early on it might have helped, always have it in your medical box fiber plex is around £10 a tube but it saved dobby months ago when he got bad poops, I am truly sorry this has happened, did the vet say if anything could have been done or was it too bad from the start, God bless little man, :'(

i dunno, its just the cabbage that seemed to do it,normal spring greens etc

i give them celery etc and cucumber, they dont seem to miss the cabbage anyway
