Unfortunately a boar bond attempt has failed, with Lou biting the other pig and leaving a puncture wound, which was flushed with saline and iodine at the vets and tteated with antibiotics and pain meds. I feel so sad, I really wanted them to get along. My sister did not take Lou with her to college and they must now have different companions in separate households. I can’t decide between another boar or a sow for Lou now, I’m scared of something happening between another boar but I’ve never had sows before.

Is Lou neutered? A boar sow pair might be better for him. If you do get another boar and the bond fails, do you have enough space for them to live side by side?

My boys bond failed, I was disappointed, but now I really like having them as neighbors. They had a weak bond and one got bullied when he was sick.

They like having their own territory and get enough interaction between the bars so not to be lonely.

He is not neutered… I’m afraid of the sedation. He is two years around according to shelter. And I don’t have room for much larger than a 2x5grids c&c cage which is what he has now.

He would need to be neutered and wait six weeks to become infertile before you could introduce a sow or you could have big problems (dozens of guinea pigs).

A lot of people have had successful neuters.

There a spayed sows at a rescue but there’s a wait list.. He seems sad without the other guinea pig being on the other side of the bars :( I want him to have a companion as soon as possible but I’m so afraid to lose him to the sedation, and this boar bonding attempt was so stressful.
