I posted on here the other day about my pig having dihorrea. She saw the vet today and was given critical care. She has completely stopped eating on her own.

This started off as a eye infection which all her cage mates got aswell but she didn't improve from treatment, she started wheezing and coughing I took her to the vet for more treatment and she was given antibiotics and metacam for swelling. She got dihorrea the day after I started that treatment but she was eating fine and drinking fine. The day after that she stopped eating and drinking she would try to but then she would walk away which was unlike her but it was a Sunday afternoon my vets was closed so I had to wait till morning to take her but she was very weak and could barely get strength to move. The vet said I could put her to sleep but it was my choice. Or I could have her hospitalised with them but I'm a student and cannot afford that bill right now. I tried to get a loan I've tried so hard to get everything I can for her ive had no support from my family, to them she is just a guinea pig... The vet said I could try critical care for a few days see if she improves but the outcome was not looking good she has only been on the antibiotics 2 days going into 3. I've been giving her water by hand with a syringe every hour and also critical care every 2/3. She has improved very slightly. But she is extremely wobbly. And can barely lift her head. But she has started to poo again and it is not dihorrea more solid but mis shaped. She still hasn't peed yet which is worrying me. I think she may of had a fit not long ago for a few seconds but she hasn't gotten any worse after that if anything she has got a little better as she has moved around and has been trying to walk she also holds her head up for a little while now when I call her and when I talk to her on my lap. I'm so worried but I don't want to give up on her.

I would like to know if anyone has done what I'm doing and whether their guinea pig survived how long were they getting treatment and whether I am being selfish here.

I would get some probiotics. Syringe water and critical care. Maybe a second opinion if you can. Can they do a payment plan? I am so sorry!

I'm sorry to say she died while watching harry potter with me a hour ago just after this post. The vet didn't want to give her probiotics and they didn't think she would survive even if hospitalised. She had critical care it seemed to work for a while but I think she was too weak and ill. I'm heartbroken but I know I did my best. And Atleast I was cuddling her.

Oh I am so sorry for your loss! Don't blame yourself as you said you did what you could. Sometimes the call of The Rainbow Bridge is just too strong and they have to go. She is at peace now and is in the prime of her life happily munching away on lush grass, popcorning and making new friends.

Thank you i really thinkI did my best . Going to be a big guinea void for a while. I'm doing art at college so I think I will draw a nice picture of her and hang it on my wall. I'm going to miss her.

She was a beautiful girl. Drawing a picture if her is a lovely thing to do. When you feel ready, feel free to pop a tribute to her on our Rainbow Bridge section. Some memners find it really helps them. There is no time limit. Look after yourself as you grieve. Have a hug cos you need one at this sad time.

I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful piggie. Sometimes there is nothing we can do to save them but at least you were with her.

I am really sorry for your loss, you did all you could. She was beautiful and had a loving home. Hugs x

I’ve been through exactly the same situation with my last piggy, he had diarrhoea, and had stopped eating/drinking. It turned out to be a problem with his back teeth they had developed sharp spurs on one side which had overgrown and were cutting into his gums. The vet filed them down and we syringe fed him that night and gave pain relief. The next day he was in pain still and I was at work so they took him for the day to feed him (it cost me about £90 for that). We then continued this for about 3 weeks solid. He never put weight on and we were getting about 70ml daily into him of critical care and water. He never touched food either until the final night then we found him next morning. It was a horrible experience and I feel for you! You did do everything you could. I’m sorry for your loss.

I am sorry! At least she got to go being loved at home! You did your best for her! Best of luck in school! 😥

Thank you guys. I will draw a picture of her and add it to the rainbow tribute when I'm not such a blubbering mess. It's nice to have people that understand that guinea pigs aren't just guinea pigs when they pass. She is the first one of my pigs that have died. She has 2 cage mates that will miss her especially the older male she has kept him company for nearly 2 years and they had a strong bond.

I’m so sorry for your loss. You really did your best for her and she’d have known how much she was loved.

Big hugs xx
