So my piggy tilly was prescribed antacids and antibiotics after some blood results have shown she is anaemic. The vet believes she may have gut ulceration. My fiance picked the drugs up yesterday and I was unfortunately v I'll with a migraine so he v thoughtfully gave her her meds. The antacids were fine but he gave the wrong dose of the antibiotic, I think mainly as there was a large 2.5ml syringe in the box. He has given 1.5mls opposed to 0.15mls :-( the antibiotic is sulfatrim - trimethoprim 16mg/ml and sulfamethoxazole 80mg/ml. I immediately panicked this morning. . She seems ok she's eating and I've just shut her in her carrier with food to check her poos. Her bum is clean. Although I've read that they can due suddenly from toxicity :'(

I'm going to call the vets as soon as they open .

I don't blame my fiance at all he was trying to help bless him. He was very upset when he realised.

I've done a quick google . I am no expert - but, from what I can see on the internet - it's the penecillin based ones that cause toxicity . The main problem with others it that it upsets the gut flora . Please keep a close eye on her .

Does your vet have an out of hours service ? If so, it would be woth ringing them straigh away to get some telephone advice.

Thank you for your replies. I spoke to the exotic vet earlier and he has said she should be fine, obviously keep an eye on her though. Don't give her any doses today then continue tomorrow as normal. She is eating and pooping normally and trotting about as normal. Fingers crossed

I'm relieved to hear there's no harm done

and - don't forget to make sure you've got enough medication to complete the whole course now .

Yes I agree that you need to give a probiotic, if you aren't in a position to go out and buy one, if you have another healthy pig, collecting a poo from it, mixing it with some water and syringing it an hour after the antibiotic will do the trick. My pig has been on antibiotics for URI for six weeks now, we used the poop soup method for 4 of those weeks and he was totally fine :)

I can only echo the advice about probiotic. And keep an eye on her poops. It may take a while to cause problems. Let us know how she gets on.

Please contact your vet and talk to him, as always in the case of an overdose.

However, don't panic; unless you girl is still a tiny baby, she is unlikely to suffer any bad side effects. I have in an emergency treated one of my boys on advice of the vet with 1 ml of the equivalent of sulfatrim until he could be seen by the vet after the weekend. It is good that your boy is on a rather lose dose anyway, so the overdose is not way over.

Penicillin is lethal for rodents, but sulfatrim is not in that category. ;)

Sulfatrim is actually very mild so you may be okay. I agree with getting some
Probiotics into her every few hours to hopefully prevent an upset tummy x
