Ebony (nearly 4yr) had a facial access removed under GA 5 days ago. Her recovery has been up and down. She finally started eating some lettuce, parsley and basil. Barely drinking and won't touch pellets. I've tried syringe feeding but she's quite difficult. Today she is back to being thoroughly miserable. Her tummy looks swollen and she's lying spread out. Won't eat. Took her to the vet and they don't think there's any gas and is just suffering from lack of nutrients. She definitely looks like she has a large swelling to me so I'm very worried. Do I force feed her anyway?

Please syringe feed asap! Ask your vet for gut stimulants and painkiller (as listed in the guide); that is important to get her going again. Your girl IS bloated from lack of food and is going into GI stasis. All the best - it is unfortunately a matter of life and death. If possible, please see a vet with more experience with small animals!

Thank you. I'm trying but on a Sunday I'm stuck with emergency vets. She has now got diarrhoea so does that mean her gut is trying to work?

No it doesn't I lost my Kiwi to this last night please take her to an exotic vet. She had an abcess removed last Monday

That's awful news. I'm sorry to hear that. I'm doing my best to find one to take her to.

Have you tried Hinckley vets4pets? They say they are open on a Sunday and they have a piggy specialist. Alternatively I would get her to the emergency vet, is it the one in Glenfield that falls under your emergency vet? If so then it's been a while since I went but they weren't horrendous with piggies and it would be better to get some gut stimulant today and see a cavy savvy vet in the morning than to not see anyone

@KatyKitchen I've used the emergency vet in Glenfield that @Lady Kelly mentions a few times with a pig with bloat. They'll inject her with gut medication which work better than oral. Then you'll be able to get her to a cavy savvy vet tomorrow

Thank you all. I've found Chine House in Sileby and they have a couple of guinea pig specialists. She has now had x rays and is being looked after with her sister for company. They'll update me tonight and hopefully deal with her teeth, which started this off, and get her eating and interested in life again. Might have to work more hours to pay for it all but they are such lovely characters that I couldn't stand by and watch her suffering. I'll let you know how she gets on x

ah ! i hope she gets better soon,i use the same vets and i find that they are very knowledgable.my foster piggie had severe bloat at the end of last week,i syringe fed him hourly for two days, gave motility drugs, gave 0.3mls of gripe water for 3 times aday, syringe feed 3 times aday.I'm still doing this and he has pulled through.it was touch and go for the first two days.I'm not feeding any veg ,and giving probiotics twice aday, until he is much better.

That's very reassuring. I've really struggled to syringe feed her as she hates it. I'm worried about aspiration if i get it wrong.

Just go very slowly, put no more than 0,3 mls of feed in the mouth at anyone time.as you and your piggie get used the the syringe feeding you will find she will take more feed in one sitting.mine is taking 30mls 3x aday now,ive attempted to reduce it but he loses weight and his poos get smaller,so he i not ready to stop feeding yet.there is a syringe guide at the top of the locator,it is excellent.x

yes the vet will advise, veternary nurse will be able to demonstrate how to feed, also do ask any questions on the forum that you need to. Read the guides as these are very useful.:)

Awesome news! Which vet did you see? I've only ever seen Craig there but he has been there longer than I have had piggies and he did Donald's operation in November too. She is definitely in safe hands there so fingers crossed you get some good news soon.

I saw Bev and Craig will see her tomorrow so good to know you've see him and thought highly of him.

Bev is great, craig is very knowledgable he does not suffer fools gladly. He says what he thinks ! you are in good hands.

Had an update. They've syringe fed her a couple of ml x ray shows "something odd" but don't know what yet. Might be ovaries, kidney, or something else. Craig will review her tomorrow.

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss! She is now popcorning at the Rainbow Bridge and playing zoomies with all her new friends. It is very sad when we lose a loved one and you have to comfort yourself that you did what you thought was best for her at the time. She is out of pain now and will always be with you in your heart. :hug:have a huge hug cos you need one!

Huge hugs @KatyKitchen the worst possible news and i'm so sorry this has happened. You did everything you could and she was in the best place for her but sometimes whatever we do will never be enough for our babies. Heartbroken for you x

I'm so sorry to hear that @KatyKitchen I know exactly how you feel as I lost my baby in the same circumstances. It may be worth finding out that result from the vet for some closure. If you do could you please let me know as I keep punishing myself for not calling an out of hours vet when she was bloated that night

I am so sorry for your loss. You really did all you could.. Huge hugs x

Sleep well little one
