Hey. here's an update on Bertie... it's not too good i'm afraid.

We went to the vet's on Tuesday because he and Fin were scatching like crazy.
When I came back from work yesterday (Wed), Bertie couldn't walk... he was trying but something was wrong. I whizzed him back to the vet's and she couldn't find anything wrong with any of his legs.
I decided to lunch at home today and discovered some blood coming out of Bertie's wee tract. It was magenta pink and jelly-like in consistency. So took another appointment at the vet's. While in the waiting room, Bertie peed on the vertbet in the travel box and it was just blood.

To recap what he's had for meds:
Tuesday : steroids to calm the itch
Wednesday : anti-inflamatory
Thursday : start a 7-day course of baytril

I'm sorry things aren't going so well with Bertie right now. Mobility issues can quite often tie in with bladder problems due to the pain in the area. Cystitis/UTI may be to blame for the blood and the pain. See how he does on the Baytril but it may be worth considering discussing with your vet the possiblity of trying Septrin. This antibiotic tends to treat the urinary tract more effectively, and is also gentler on the tummy.

did I say he's eating and drinking OK? Well, he's lost weight for not getting to the food but when he does, his appetite is fine.

we're not sure, but that would be the best case scenario. There is elways the fear that it's the growth in his tummy causing all the upset. 8...

Poor Bertie. Hope all goes well and things settle down for him! x>>

Bertie has been doing OK today. he's still on the baytrill - which he hates. He's eaten OK today and I have been checking the bedding and have found n new evidence of bleeding. There has however been much more wee than the last couple of days, he's drunk more too. I'm hoping he's flushing all the badness out of his system...

We were told not to exceed 7 days for the Baytrill. How long should I keep him on it if the problem has cleared? I am loathe to pack him full of chemicals especially when the stronger he gets the more vigorously he pushed the syringe away with his paws and the wrigglier he gets.

Ok, that's helpful...
Bertie was really cute earlier... I was greeted by a little brown fluffy nose when I came back from work because being quite a clever pig, he knows that although Daddy (Maxy) had been home for a while, food comes from Mummy.... So he was dancing like crazy by the door of the cage hoping to be fed... bless!:)

Awww he sounds like a wonderful boy :) xx

Bertie is looking much better today, but the poor sod has had a lot to put up with over the past few months. He's a fighter and I think he'll still be with us for some time yet.

we're still doing good... No more blood since Friday morning. Phew!

It's been so nice today that we treated both boys to a little stay in the garden for fresh grass...rolleyes

I'm so glad that Bertie is continuing to improve. I've decided to appoint myself his auntie, so tell him that I'm sending him some special cuddles and kisses. And so Fin won't feel left out, I'll send him some, too.

I have to come clean about the tales I have been telling about Maxy.... He did actually feed the boys on Friday afternoon... He'd cut some grass especially for them and they had cleaned their plate in no time. I think they have put 2 and 2 together that if we smell like we've been out it's because we have grass, hence, possibly, the franctic dancing when I arrived back from work... I think I was conned by my 2 GPs...rolleyes

Bertie is still doing good. the infection seems to have cleared. We are still in 2 monds whether to continue with the baytril for another 4 days as it does affect his apetite. Last time we gave him biolapis, it went a funny colour and had a terrible smell, so we're not too keen on that either...

Any advice welcome

I hope he gets well quickly. I have no advice sorry, I'm not very good with piggies illnesses.
Goodluck getting him better, wishing you the best :D

How long did you keep the same solution of Bio-Lapis for, or how often did you make fresh?

24 hours and daily. It was all sort of cloudy/milky in appearance and smelled yeasty/malty. It's only happened once and we were surprised that they refused to drink until we emptied the bottles. It may be that that particular pack was affected but I haven;t chanced it since - mostly because piggies have been fine.

I always syringe bio-lapis to make sure they've had it - if you put it in the bottles, it can (as you say!) put some piggies off drinking altogether. I syringe a few lots of 1ml syringe-fulls down them a few times a day when they're on antibiotics, not at the same time as the Baytril but a couple of hours after

I might just try that if I can find the sachets

blood has completely cleared but we're still not 100%. Taking one day at a time...:(

had a good couple of days, went our to the garden a couple times too. So far so good. Some weight gain too which is nice.

I'm glad to hear that Bertie is getting over his infection so well, but make sure he gets the full course of antibiotics - or the infection may come back!
And you REALLY don't want to go there!

Your Bertie seems to be a BIG sweetheart!

8...8...8...

Bertie's taken a turn for the worse... he's refused to eat anything today: hay, cucumber, carrot, melon, lettuce or even GRASS.... I'm at my wit's end... Maxy's had to go on our weekend away on his own so I can stay and look after big piggy.

He's had 2 x 5ml Critical care, o.2 ml calpol and tied the biolapis but it really smells rank. Checked the bbe and it's 18 months away... Dunno what to do!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP....

Is he still on the Baytril? It's possible this has hit his digestion/appetite, especially since he did react a little earlier on in the course of it.
Is he moving around, or just sitting hunched/fluffed up? Any urine/poops coming out? A call in to the emergency vet (or just telephone advice) may be needed if he doesn't pick up quickly.

when out of the cage he moves O back to his house then nothing. he's straining to pass I think urine. poops have been OK so far. He's now fluffed up and hunched up in his house...
