over the past few days one of our pigs has been sneezing lots and shivering, he wont eat or drink. we have tried wrapping him up and putting a hot water bottle under him, hes just not him self, is it serious or a cold as the seasons are changing now? :( please help!

hello. guinea pigs cannot get colds, however they do get Upper Respiratory Infections, and it sure sounds like that is what it is. You need to get him to the vet ASAP, this sounds serious. You also need to syringe feed him water and food so his digestive system doesn't shut down. this sounds very urgent. please get him seen.

You need to keep him warm and get some fluids and food into him if he is not eating and get him to a vet ASAP, this sounds serious and like an URI.

He needs to be seen by a vet ASAP as he sounds poorly.

Is he an indoor our outdoor pig?

okay thank you very much, how do we feed him? blend the food orr?

Do you feed pellets? If so pour warm water on them and leave to cool, then mush them up into a paste. You then syringe this slowly into their mouth from the side using a 1ml syringe with the tip cut off, but make sure the black plunger cannot go into the mouth. Alternatively you can get recovery food from the vet or critical care from somewhere like www.vetuk.co.uk

I can give you more information on syringe feeding should you need it.

Please get your piggy seen by a vet as quickly as possible, this sounds very serious. Any piggy that goes off its food needs a vet trip pretty sharpish. it is likely URI, but it could be something else. http://www.guinealynx.info/uri.html
We have a piggy savvy UK vets locator if you haven't got a good vet: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/locator/vets.html

Please weigh your piggy daily to check the food intake. Your vet should be able to give you some recovery powder tomorrow.
Here are tips on how to hand feed. Please use a 1ml syringe whose narrow tip has been cut off (ask your vet for one); you will need to feed about 120ml in small portions around the clock over the course of 24 hours. Also syringe water if your piggy isn't drinking.

VET......NOW!..TONIGHT......please?

A "cold piggy" is a VERY SICK piggy.

Until you do so, we can not give any further help as your piggie is seriously ill. You MUST seek veterinary advice tonight otherwise you may be in the process of breaching of the Animal Welfare Act

I am glad that he is better. Please keep weighing him daily for as long as he isn't eating properly.
