I'm really sorry I have no experience with anything like this but whatever it is it looks quite serious, personally I'd seek vetinary care ASAP!

Wow that looks so sore! Has he been in a fight? Kind of looks like a wound. Or maybe mites? Sorry I obviously can't give you advice, except a vet really needs to treat this ASAP. Good luck.

That is quite possibly self mutilation from an advanced infestation of manage mites, please take to your vets as soon as possible

I agree with Gizzy, looks like mange mites to me too though there is also the possibility of fungal. He needs to see a vet as soon as possible for treatment and pain relief. If he is scratching that much he will possibly need a steroid injection or course of oral steroids. However, please note that it will not be possible for him to have anti-inflammatory pain relief at the same time as steroids. If it is mange mites the preferable treatment will be a course of 3 Ivermectin injections a week to 10 days apart.

Do you have a guinea pig savvy vet near you? if you are unsure please check out our recommended vets locator.

I have just realised, you are not in the UK and I think I have helped before, is this the same pig? Did you go back to your vet?

Hi there , Quite possibly when you eradicate the infection (may take a few weeks if it is manage mites)one of the main problems you're going to have stop in your pig from scratching the wounds when they dry

I have had many pig's that have been handed in to my sanctuary with this problem and it can become a vicious circle, and very time consuming

The original cause has gone, but the pig continues to self mutilate due to the drying /tightening affect of the wound,

Though sometimes a Guinea pig with this type of injury will allow it to heal quite naturally.

But if you do encounter any problems then you could always try an E collar(Elizabethan collar) or a body stocking, though the success rates of the pig excepting them are not very high.

Personally I have had the best results with steroids prescribed/injected by a vet, and the soothing affect of a proprietary wound powder

Thank you everyone...i tried calling the vet today and he is closed until monday due to the Easter weekend...is there anything i can do at home to help him until i can get him to the vet...the poor thing cries out so loud every now and then it makes me cry :(

And yes helen105281 I went back to the vet the last time and he had said everything was fine and that it was probably the shampoo that i was using to bath him and to use a sensitive skin one the next time :( i've been feeling really bad maybe i should have gotten a second opinion... can guinea pigs die quickly with a sore like this

If it it mange mites then the scratching can make the piggy very poorly, if untreated they can suffer severe fits which can be fatal :( Please try to get him to a vet as soon as you can, you can check the Guinealynx site for mange mites & print the page off to take with you to show the vet. If your piggy is crying it is in obvious pain & needs to see a vet urgently :(

i feel so bad for the poor piggy i've done nothing but cry since i noticed it last night i have a appointment sechuled for monday>>>hope i can keep him comfortable until then. I guess one good thing is that he is still eating and drinking and being his normal self except for the sore on his back :(

So he has not been treated for mange mites at all? I agree that your vet should look at Guinea Lynx so he knows how to diagnose them. Good luck on Monday.

Hi guys I'm here to give an update on oreo i went to the vet yesterday and demanded a testing for mites and said i was unhappy because i was told the last tie oreo was fine and guess what he has a severe case of mites... he had 2 doses of ivetrimicin and has to go back in 10 days for his second dose...just curious has anyone ever used hibitante on their guinea pigs...the vet gave it to me and told me to dilute it in warm water and wash the affected area every 12-24 hours until healed

I'm so pleased you finally have a diagnosis. Hibitante is Chlorhexidine which is Hibiscrub in the UK and is a skin cleanser so I can see why the vet has suggested it to help the wound heal. Did the vet give the Ivermectin by injection? Also did he prescribe any pain relief?

yes the vet gave him ivermectin by injection and no he didn't give anything for pain relief just the hibitant... is it best to bath him in the hibitant or just clean the affected area with it....i know the vet said just the affected area but would bathing him in it give him more relief
