Hi, I’m gigi, and I now own 1 guinea.
Yesterday, I got a new guinea pig, he was 6 weeks ans the sweetest baby boy ever, me and my other guinea, pepper loved him so much. He was the best, and put me in such happy spirits. Today, I left to g9 visit my dad, and accidently left my door cracked open. Upon returning, my cat had opened the door, and gotten ahold of him. I wont go into detail, but I cant stop crying, knowing it was all my fault.
Any ideas to cope..?

I am so sorry that you’re going through this but please try and not blame yourself which is easier said than done I know.

This was just a tragic accident. I won’t go in to details but I accidentally killed one of my guinea pigs a few months ago. I couldn’t stop crying and I still feel guilty now.

I ended up phoning the blue cross animal bereavement service and I found that really helpful. You can find their number on google xx

I am very sorry! It is a very upsetting experience. Please don't blame yourself too badly; it is in the nature of freak accidents like yours that they cannot be foreseen and therefore not prevented. It is always much easier to realise the potential for an accident afterwards; it is usually not something that you would anticipate when you have sensible measures of precaution in place.

The best thing you can do is to talk about it with somebody trained who is bound by a confidentiality agreement. There are now pet bereavement lines, in some cases free of charge, in a number countries; if you are outside the UK you may have to google for pet bereavement phone lines or email services in your area/country. All forum members who have made use of pet bereavement lines have come back with a positive experience.

Here are our tips on what you can do for your Pepper as he will be shocked as well. Of course I would not show him the body in your case. it would be good if you found him a new friend again, but allow him to grieve and get over his shock for a few days. Make sure that he is not injured himself. Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

One way of dealing with a tragic accident like yours in a constructive way is to ensure that it cannot happen again.
Please make sure that you keep your guinea pigs in a cat-proof cage with a firm top and where your cat can't reach through the grids. Don't just leave an open cage behind a closed door which can spring open or be accidentally left open if you are in a hurry. Having a double defence can safe lives in the future.

So sorry for your loss. This must be be very upsetting but accidents do happen. I would use the blue cross animal bereavement service. It helps to talk to people who understand what your going through. Hugs to you and Pepper. Sleep tight little Piggy. xx

I'm so sorry for your loss. Please don't blame yourself. Accidents happen its a horrible fact of life. It's a horrible situation to be in, but be assured you are providing the best for your pigs. Give yourself time to grieve and enjoy the little one you still have for a while xx

Thank you so much for your response. It means so much to have help from others who understand the terrible state I am currently in. I will be calling one of these lines to help me and pepper cope in a time of such tradgey. Right when I saw what happened, I did remove the body from the cage, Pepper will be given some extra care, until I feel he is ready for a new friend. I currently have a 2x4 c&c with. 2x1 loft, so it is uncovered. With these incidents I feel you never expect them to happen, however I already went online and purchased a cover. Thanks for your reply.

Much love from me and pepper.

Thank you so much for your response. It means so much to have help from others who understand the terrible state I am currently in. I am currently trying to forgive myself, its just so diffucult knoeing it could have been prevented eith a close of the door. I try so hard to please my piggies and it’s absolutely devastating knowing what I have done. Me and pepper are going to take a while to recover from the incident before I visit the LA rescue and find pepper the perfect friend.

Much love and thanks from me and pepper xx

A simple tip - say to yourself every day “I forgive myself”.
At some point you will realise that it’s true.
