I have a 3 year old female Albino Abyssinian Flapjack - she has been very healthy up until a few months ago when she had a respiratory infection. This was cleared by Baytril (antibiotic) Her sister reacted badly to the Baytril and sadly passed away last month :-( Flapjack has started crying after eating and rearing up as if something is stuck? She doesn't have loose stools or as far as I can see constipated? I feed her hay, fresh grass and good dry food, with the occasional treat of a slice of cucumber. I have now seen 3 vets who check everything seemingly (heart, teeth, etc), but say she has nothing wrong with her; I am worried as they said this about her sister a week before she died. Any suggestions are appreciated please.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't know which vets you have seen but perhaps they aren't particularly cavy savvy as it sounds like Flapjack is in pain. If you are in the UK you might find a vet on our vet locator in the top bar which is vets recommended by members on the forum. If you aren't if you let us know roughly where in the world you are there might be another member who can point you in the right direction

Hi
I am ever so sorry for your loss. Rearing up and squeaking when pooing or peeing generally indicates a problem in the urinary tract. Has Flapjack had a scan or ex-ray to check for bladder stones or sludge? How piggy savvy are your vets?

Please monitor her weight daily and step in with syringe feed support once she loses more than 50g of weight within a short space of time.

Since we have got members from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can adapt any advice to what is relevant and available where you are instead of having to keep thing as general as possible. Click on your username on the top bar, then got personal details and scroll down to location. This makes it appear with every post you make and saves all of us time. Thank you!

Thank you for replying so quickly, she hasn't had any scans, but I will ask for these asap now. I have tried various vets, but have taken her to the one recommended on here: Grove Lodge in Brighton UK. She is still eating and was 1.06kg on Friday, I'll weigh her again now.
I'll add my location now; sorry I'm a novice to forums...

Welcome to the forum! Sorry you're going through all this, it's tough :(

I went to Grove vets once. Is it Lauren you see there?

It might be a bit far but I've got a pretty good vet in Maresfield who is the best I've found in my area but it a bit nervous about prescribing unusual antibiotics, hoping that will change! But they're very good for the normal stuff :)

So sorry you are having a rough time at the moment.
But it sounds like you are doing everything possible to help your piggy.

One thing I would suggest is if possible try and get a film of the behaviour at home.
If your piggy is anything like my lot the minute they get to the vet they will immediately behave totally normally and make you look like a crazy person.
So sometimes it helps to be able to show the vet a picture or video.

Thanks, we saw Suzi at Grove lodge; she checked everything and said it might be an infection, but I was very cautious of antibiotics, I have some from a few months ago that were for her sister (Pancake) and on close inspection of the cage, there are a few red spots on the paper, very worrying but with her drinking lots of water too, it seems like a urinary infection is likely. I'll request the check for kidney stones too.

Thanks to everyone for all your help, it is really appreciated :-)

Hello and welcome.

If you are afraid of giving Flapjack baytril, ask your vet to prescribe Septrin which is generally a better antibiotic for Urinary infections anyway.

I'm afraid that if it is a urinary infection, it won't go away on it's own and antibiotics will need to be given x

Thank you everyone for your help with this issue, sadly Flapjack was very poorly with a suspected tumour that was affecting her swallowing, so we had to say bye :-( RIP dear little Flapjack and her sister Pancake, we spent a lovely four years together though.:-)
Please say hello to Biscuit and Bourbon, our new babies :luv:xx
