I accidentally cut my pig's nail too short and she has been bleeding for 4 hours. I've tried the usual cornstarch, flour, ice, pressure, and even a tourniquet for a few minutes (vet recommendation). We are more than 2 hours from the nearest vet. Any ideas? How long can pig bleed for before it's a major problem?

Has the bleeding been heavy or just spotting?

In all honesty 4 hours is a long time either way. I see this post was a couple of hours ago, so if she is still bleeding, I would take her to the vets now.

I know the feeling of travelling to see a vets, but it's better to take the time to do it now and ensure she is healthy rather than spend the rest of the day worrying. My other concern would be that she could pick up an infection - the longer a wound is open the more likely it is to get infected.

For the future a good thing to have in your medical box is a 'styptic pencil' which is designed for this purpose, and they are very cheap to pick up.

hope she is ok. 4 hours is a long time. hope you managed to see the vet x
