HELP desparate for advice for cage lining?

I'm new to c&c cages - have just built a lovely 3x4 grids cage for my two girlies - here is photo

As you can see in photo I was using woodshavings which are very good except the floor was slippery as when piggies ran it went everywhere and they kept slipping on their feet.

I'm now using towels and fleece and I am finding it a bit mucky :{

I cleaned them out today and the towels at the back of the cage were soaking wet :{ towels/fleece only been in there 3 days? ?/

Can i ask everyone a few questions:- ?/

1) Putting soiled towels/fleece into washing machine .......is it hygenic?

2) What wash temperature would you recommend?

3) How often do i change towels/fleece?

4) How can i keep their cage sanitary each day?

5) when babies come how can i clean cage out without upsetting mum and babies?

  1. we tend to use pillow cases or duvet covers (+ tied knots) to wash ours so the hay is contained
  2. 60 + AND a BIO powder
  3. I change every 2/3 days for 2 adult males
  4. poop scoops are a good idea and a hay tray so it doesn't go every where and is easy to clean
  5. I don't know for that one, sorry

Just posted on your other thread, check out absorbent washable bed pads (miles better than towels apparently ). Meanwhile: I'd put newspaper under the shavings if you go back to them temporarily, it should provide a bit more traction than just shavings and Correx.

I put mine in all the time. I cant see it being a problem. But maybe once in a while doing an empty wash with disinfectant if your worried.

2) What wash temperature would you recommend?
Proabably 60, but i do mine at 50 i think and its better to be biological washing powder

3) How often do i change towels/fleece?
I change my herds twice a week, so every 3/4 days, but they do have an upper floor with hay in. So for you two girlies i would say every 4 or so days, but if you put absorbant material underneath you will find it lasts longer. Something like old towels work really well.

Brush/hoover or hand pick out any poops

So long as you dont clean the cage for about 4/5 days after the babies are born you wont distirb them, just take mummy and baba's out and put them in a carrier or pen together and then put them back. They wont be upset about it.

I wash mine on 40 degrees with a non bio liquid (fleece and washable incontinence pads) and they've always been fine. I have recently bought a horsewear washbag as the duvet cover kept coming undone and I am very happy with the results as there is no hair left in the machine anymore. :)

I wash mine at 40/50 but with nothing else and haven't had any ossues, if you're concerned about the machine after maybe just put your machine on a quick rinse/spin cycle?

2) What wash temperature would you recommend? see above, but most fleece shrinks if you go above 50...

3) How often do i change towels/fleece?
I change mine every 4 days, sometimes i can scrape 5. I use a thick layer of newsaper, then a large thick towel, then one fleece, doubled over. You might have found the fleece mucky if you hadnt washed them prior to use. Wash them first and without fabric softner. The fabric softner acts as a waterproof barrier so if you dont use it, just a non bio powder or liquid tab, it'sll wick through to the towel then paper. I do this and never find the fleece damp.

I have a kitty litter shovel and turn it over, use as a rake and scoop up poop and wasted food each day, sometimes morning and night sometimes just once a day, it depends!

Have you got another thread? Think I posted on there about fleece. Best thing to do is to get all the poops/hay off (as much as poss) and we then clean out the filter of our washing machine for the inevitable 'bits' plus fur shedding etc.

How is the pregnancy going? The guinea, that is ;)
 
I too use towels and fleece. Where my piggies pee and poop the most I put a hay tray...in the form of a plastic dog basket with sawdust, shredded paper and lots of hay. As my two boars spend most of their time in there together eating and pooping this saves some mess.....but not all....they are messy little creatures :))
 
I put my towels and fleece in a single duvet cover and tie the top not a problem:)

You old also try putting a litter tray in there with carefresh or woodshavings, my piggies use this and it cuts down on how much they wee on the fleece.

Try attaching a hayrack to the littertray, the high corner ones are good for this, and then they tend to pee whilst their eating in the littertray!
