Help! Does anyone know what this is?

I noticed Crunchy was swollen down below when I got him out today. I pulled some hay out and wondered if this is what may have been causing the problem. He is eating ok and is fine in himself. It didn't hurt him when I touched it either. I am taking him to the vets tomorrow, but just wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what it is? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is this easy to treat? Sorry, I'm being a bit naive! I have looked at the other threads on here about sperm rods but didn't come across any pictures of the swollen genitals :{
 
Looks like a prolapsed rectum. I would keep the area moist and pop some lubricant on it if possible. And if possible get him to a vet sooner. It should be able to to sorted but needs a vet to have a look. Also looks like he may have worms, but i cant see very well.

Thank you. That doesn't sound good :(. The two bits sticking out are actually attached. The earliest I can get him to a vet is tomorrow. i'm so worried for him
 
Not knowing what he normally looks like down below, I would say that looks like a prolapse.

Is he peeing and pooing normally?

If you're not sure, separate him from any cagemates until you are sure. Bed him on fleece or vetbed if you can, so that he's not getting shavings/carefresh/hay whatever stuck in there.

A water based lubricant should be used to keep him moist and clean - KY jelly is ideal, or anything else non-scented but waterbased. It's a bank holiday but places like tesco express/co-op and large supermarkets/chemists may still open if you don't have any (always a good one to keep in your first aid kit!).

He does need to see a vet, but as long as he's peeing and pooing, he should be ok until tomorrow.

If he's not peeing/pooing normally, he needs to see the emergency vet ASAP.
 
I'd have said a prolapsed rectum as well, poor fella, hope the vet can shed some light on it. Tracey x
 
That looks like a strangulated willy to me - there could be a sperm rod/smegma/debris (usually all three when it's this nasty) that is wrapped around the base of the shaft, engorging the penis. The interior structure of the penis is very complex giving the unusual appearance.

An experienced person needs to examine this and deal with it as the constriction can be very difficult to dislodge and remove.

Is he still able to pee and poo?

Thank you so much everyone. I have just put some lubricant on him and separated him from his mate for now. He's in a carrier on vetbed and some kitchen roll so I will leave him for a bit to see if he wees or poos. I'm starting to panic now... I just want him to be ok! :(
 
My advice will be do not touch it, completely leave it alone and get him to a vets as soon as possible. Tonight would be best, tomorrow morning at latest.
 
Good news! He was weeing and pooing fine last night, so I decided to leave it till this morning to take him to the vets. When I checked him the swelling had gone down, there was no redness or soreness and he was almost back to normal! He's still doing fine and it's looking really good! I'm monitoring him closely and obviously if anything changes I will get him to the vets straight away. I'm so happy... Clever Crunchy for mending himself :D!

Umm, does this mean you haven't taken him to the vets yet then? Even if you think it looks okay now, this guinea pig really needs to have a proper check-up at the vets. Those pictures were truly shocking and I'm worried about him. Please take him to the vets.

You should definitely take him to the vets, that certainly isn't normal for a piggy :(

I would also take your camera with that photo on & show the vet, if it is a prolapse of any kind it could happen again & strangulation of whatever it may be can occur which would cause the blood supply to be cut off & result in rapid (& painful) death of your piggy. Please get him checked out asap.

As a boar willy expert, I was going to post yesterday but the advice you had received was great...and you report that things seem back to normal. Great - your piggie is not "in extremis" any longer.

However, given you didn;t get to a vet today, I would like to urge you to take your piggie to a vet TOMORROW for a full check-up WITHOUT FAIL!

Those photos were [*]the very worst case[/*] of a strangulated, inverted willy I have ever ever seen and there could be some serious repercussions for your boy if this is not attended to immediately by a vet.

The willy was clearly showing signs of infection, no piggie willy EVER shows its two horns to that extent, (I hope you didn;t try to pull them thinking they were sperm rods - it's easily done!) and just because it has now gone back into it;s sheath does not mean he isn;t still carrying the infection/inflammation/trauma that could now cause future kidney/bladder issues. He may need antibioitics and an anti-inflammatory (metacam which also gives some pain relief)

The problem may now be hidden by his foreskin - but it is STILL there (and given your photos it looks like it has been going on for longer than a couple of days) That could mean there is also a real chance he could get a blockage in urination if he doesn;t receive veterinary attention/medication, which could cause really serious problems for his kidneys.

I am not normally someone who wishes to frighten people or lay down the law and I'm sure you are doing what you think is best - but perhaps you are not fully understanding of quite how serious the implications of his condition are?

Given the nature of the photos, and the possible implications, I really felt I had to post and alert you to the fact that he really should receive proper veterinary attention tomorrow and get a full and thorough checkover.

I have been on the look out on here for a willy expert :))

Are there any links on here or useful information anywhere about caring for and checking boys bits? What is normal etc, what sperm rods are etc (thankfully never come across one!)

My two boys are coming up for a year old and while I always check their bottoms to make sure they are clean I have never tried to check their penises and wouldn't know how (would be too scared of doing damage).

To the OP please, please take your guinea pig to the vet, I am certainly no expert but can tell he has a serious problem that needs medical attention and he definitely has not mended himself rolleyes. I hope your piggy gets better soon he is lovely :)

To Pebble: obviously i have seen the original pic (and it's horrifying) but i really dont know what I'm looking at. what IS a strangulated willy? and what did you mean when you said they wouldnt show both of their horns? I'm sorry, I'm just confused. i have 3 boars, and I'm wondering if this is common; should i be on the look out for this? i always check their bums too, and and have never seen anything close to that. any advice is appreciated.

and to the OP, I'm sorry your boy is going through this :( please take Pebble's advice and get him to a vet, and please let us know how he get's on! best of luck to you and your boy. xx

Sorry to gatecrash but i'd find this information really useful too :))

I've had Finley for 4 months now and Jenny (Crawley GP rescue) kindly showed me how to look after his boy bits, however, whilst I can check it I still do not feel confident in doing so! I find I need an extra hand to get it out and then to clean it rolleyes, I guess practice makes perfect! Any information would be really appreciated! Many thanks and maybe we could make it a sticky?

Squiggles, really hope your lovely little boy has been to the vets and you now have a plan of action to get him better! :)
 
Sorry I haven't been on here sooner to update you all. Crunchy has been to the vets and he is fine. The vet said there was no infection and it was all looking normal. i showed him the original picture so he knew what he was dealing with, and he gave Crunchy a really thorough going over. He didn't need antibiotics or anything else :). Good news!

I am suprised by that! Personally I would be taking him to a different vet for a second opinion as I wouldnt be happy with just leaving him as he is.

It might not be infected but it certainly doesnt look normal, I am not a piggy expert though and some of the other members might have some more knowledgable advice to add

My piggy Howard has developed this problem. He was neutered 2 weeks tomorrow as both him and his brother have become very randy of late and cannot live together anymore, we thought castration would help (after a lot of check ups and confirming our vet could do the op and the risks were minimal - knowing how piggys dont fair well under anestetic).

Yesterday we tried to reintroduce but they were jumping each other again and it seems out H got a little over excited but now his thingumy keeps popping out. I have read how to pop it back in but over the last 24 hours is has come back out 4 times. I have him on towels now to check he is peeing ok and that he doesnt get hay stuck to his bits so I can be sure when I pop him back in he is clean - as worried about infection.

Will it stop or does he need the vet?

I'm assuming you're re-introducing Howard to his brother, sadly castration won't stop your boys exhibiting dominant behaviour towards one another. Dominant behaviour can be chasing, mounting, rumblestrutting, nipping, biting etc.
Regarding his penis, if it retracts by itself i would leave alone & monitor for infection as you are doing. I have no experience with this so can't offer any advice as to when/wether it will stop.
