Hello, I have a emergancy here! I ran out of hay yesterdy so the pigs only got fresh grass and today we have bought some new hay, Its peters Pasture Hay. This is the second time I bought that hay And I suspect that it is moldy! It has black dots and stuff all over and dose not really smell like grass like it did with the first bale I got. I spent all my money on that bale so I cant just go and get another one :( Even worse my mum doesn't care and said she will not buy a new one and even if I get more money I am not allowed to buy them some! I know hay is very very important so I don't know what to do. I will put a picture up if you want to see it. Please Help!

Your mom won't let you get anymore hay when you do have money?!? That's not right. I think she is trying to make you get rid of them. I'm sorry but that sounds very mean of her to act that way. :( I didn't like the snake we had but I always made sure it had what it needed.

Not doing so is cruel. So I assume if they were to get sick she would be of no help to then either.

I'm sorry you're in this position.

Please don't give this hay to your pigs. Its mouldy, and will make them very ill. Which will cost your mom a lot more money in vet bills.
I would take the hay back and get your money back.
Guinea pigs need hay to graze on to keep their gut moving. If they don't have hay their gut will stop moving and again will cost your mom money in vets.
In the mean time give them grass.

take the hay back and get a replacement. they will do this if it's mouldy. x

She loves them and would not try to get rid of them. It;s just we sort a don't really have money now and she hates buying things :P As for when I get money, I'm not really sure I usually just ask for some money or do chores. She's really not a bad mum just hates spending money

I read it, that sounds good.

What would happen if they did get sick? Would she help you pay the vet? You should start trying to earn some more money and stash it aside just incase something ever happens to them and they need a vet. Then you can tell her YOU can pay for it or most of it and maybe a nice vet would let you pay the rest off little by little. I think if you go in with some money that would help them maybe let you do that. Maybe you could offer to clean around the office or something. I don't know what the laws are in AU about that sort of thing.
Anyway, better to be a little prepared.

Ok I didn't mean to say she was, it just sort if sounded to me in your post like she was trying to make it difficult for you to keep them.

My husband hates spending money also lol. So I get it. :)

I'm so relieved that's not the case.

It's so weird to me it's after 4pm in AU AND it's 1:11am here in Minnesota.

Yes I do need to save up as I want to buy so many things for them. I do also need to take Gizi to the vet becuase she has ringworm and it has healed up on her nose but now it had spread inside her ear :/ And they both need a check up...

Ok you know you can catch that from them. I'm gonna tell you a secret that I learned when being a vet tech. Ummm here in the states we have a product over the counter I believe it's for men's ummmmm jock itch. You can use that. I will find out the name of the med in it and you can see if you can get it there. I will also see if it would be safe to use on the pigs.

I can call my vet friend if I have to. So let me check it out before you do anything. I caught once while working in the clinic from baby kittens.

Yes I have already caught it from her... I used Lamisil Jock itch and it's still a bit there but it is going away slowly. I use canesten cream or something like that on her but I was wondering if I could use the jock itch thing on her...

Yes this is what I found you can use these on the pigs.

dt.gif
Miconazole cream (Monistat 7, Femizol-M – human OTC med), active ingredient: miconazole nitrate 2%
dt.gif
Clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin, Mycelex, Lotrimin, Lotrisone), active ingredient clotrimazole 1%

Small areas of hair loss can be cleaned with a dilute solution of chlorhexidine gluconate 2% solution (see supplies), dry, then apply miconazole cream to the area twice a day. Continue treatment until fungus is gone.

If you can't get that cleaning mix there. You can use dilute hydrogen peroxide to clean it. Say 2 parts h2o2 and 1 part h2o.

It takes awhile for it to clear up. I can't remember how often I applied it to myself, but I would guess at least twice a day and I kept it covered as to not spread it to anyone else or any other animals I had to handle.

Just keep putting it on until it's gone and then maybe do it a little longer just to be sure you got it all.

Thanks! I honestly think you were right about her being a bad mum... She says I'm over reacting and she just doesn't want to believe that hay is moldy! She searched on her computer and didnt't even bother to come and look at what I found! She said that it only say 'could' cause stomache problems. So she said it is not certain. I am still not giving up! Do you think I could make my own hay for a while? I already tried making hay and it is the garage in the sun as my garage is always hot and humid... But I probably can't make enough hay for them. She al

how long has she had ringworm? just wondered if it could be the hay because you can get fungal spores in there, and then this time the hay is definitely off. it might all be part of a bad batch recently.

my ches got ringworm at one stage, and then so did i. he was on lamisil cream and his medication was terbinafine. both these were for four weeks. and i was on lamisil cream aswell

when you hopefully exchange the hay, ask to open and check it before you leave, so you don't have to go back again if the next bag is also off.

She already had ringworm when we got her. She came from a pet shop and was in a bad condition because of the limited space and hay. They didn't have much pellets or hay and only got it twice a day and some veggies in the afternoon. I consider it to be quiet a rescue itself

some pet shops have no clue  hopefully the cream will help. x

I have no idea about making your own hay but if you find a way PLEASE let me know lol.

Tell her to look at what YOU found. Tell her it can also cause lung problems from the spores. You always have to look at more than one source of info.

I don't think she's bad, VERY stubborn yes lol.

I wouldn't feed them any of your hay until someone on here with more knowledge answers that question. Would it be Timothy hay?

It is pasture hay and yes I will FORCE her to look at it! And yes she is very stubborn

She is also in a bad mood so that doesn't help
Maybe wait until tomorrow then, it will be a fresh and hopefully better day.

Are they use to getting grass? If so like someone said above you can use that until you can return the bad hay. Do you live far from where you got the hay? You couldn't bring it back on bike or anything?

Well I would LOVE to make my own hay, it's very expensive.
Yes it is! It's coming up to spring and summer. Well it is already spring so it's starting to get hot so I hoped if I put the grass in the sun. I also have to hand pick the grass becuase of the bad fumes of the lawn mower so thats a pain in the bum

That's another weird thing about AU it's summer there when it's winter here. I find it fascinating and I want to see the toilet water go the opposite way when I flush it hahahaha. My sister spent time there and told me about it.

Actually when I was young my dad almost moved our family to AU.

They are used to grass, at least I think I give them some everyday or sometimes I got out to the front of the house and stay with them on the grass. (We don't have grass in the backyard) My mom would not let me go on bike and also it is very far away! It's in another state. We got the hay from coles but I can't go back there again and I don't think my mum would take me there.

Awww that's to bad. Maybe tomorrow morning get up and make her breakfast and bring it to her in bed with coffee if she likes that. :D I would DIE if my kids ever did that lol. I would know they wanted something but the gesture would get me for sure.
