Hi all,
I have had my two boys for nearly a year now and they have lived together in the same cage the whole time. Percy just wanted to be friends but Pedro would like his independence and would always grumble when Percy came close (but they would never hurt each other).

Pedro became a bit poorly last week so we put him in a separate cage (still close to Percy’s) just until he got better. We tried the two pigs with each other again a few days ago and Percy being his usual self went up to Pedro and seemed really happy that he had his pal back. Pedro on the other hand started to attack Percy and was really biting him. So we put them into their separate cages and took it as their bond had broken and I’d have to keep the separated for evermore.

Today I cleaned them out and put them both back in the same cage (but I have separated the top from the bottom) and Percy seems fine, but Pedro has started really squeaking and digging. Does anyone know what this means? Is he stressed out or is he happy to be back in his orignal home?

TIA
A x

Welcome.
My understanding is if they are fighting and blood has been drawn they need to be separated.

Hi! Please take the time to read this guide here; it talks you through all the aspects in detail so you can assess for yourself whether the bond is still working or not.
Boars: Teenage, Bullying, Fighting, Fall-outs And What Next?

NEVER introduce or re-introduce guinea pigs in a piggy's cage. The new arrival is perceived as an intruder (and will feel as an intruder) - even after a medical separation, you need to let them meet on neutral ground. Keep in mind that guinea pigs scent mark their territory and that scent/pheromones are a much stronger sense and play a much more vital role in guinea pig communication than in human communication.
