Hi.
I need some advice quickly please.
I’m looking after my sisters’ pinnies. Had them for 2 years now, had no problems until now.
Boyo is just over 6 years old, I noticed he had a swollen nose so took him to the vet.
He gave him an injection of Baytril and Dex something, he also gave me some liquid Baytril to give him for 5 days. The following day when I was giving him his meds I noticed that his eye was potruding out. Took him straight back. Vet said it could be a tumour behind the eye.
Every morning for 5 days he had injections of Baytril and liquid for a further 4 days. He recovered completely. Now after 2 weeks the same thing has happened.
Now some questions:
If it was a tumour would the antibiotic affect it? ( make it go down)
If it is a sinus infection would it make the eye protrude outwards?
Could it be something else?
I’m taking him to the vets at 4-30 today so I would like some ideas as to what to ask him.
Thank you all.
Lily.

Hi there. Sorry to hear about Boyo. I havent had any experience of this before. I don't know whether antibiotics would have any effect on a tumour. I think it depends how advanced the tumour was. My guinea pig has had a sinus infection/upper respiratory infection before but it has never effected her eyes. I hope you get the help and advice you need and hope Boyo is better soon.

I've no experience with eyes I'm sorry. Hope someone else can help. Good luck at the vets. Perhaps it is inflamation? Could be from the sinus area?

Sorry not much help but thinking of your little pig. :smitten:

Thanks for your replies, he's given him more shots. We'll see how he is after the course antiboitics.
The eye has gone down slightly. Thank you for your kind thoughts. :smitten:

Good news that the eye has gone down. Keep us posted bless him. :smitten:

Oh i'm sorry to hear about your little Boyo, it sounds quite nasty :'( :'( :'( :'(
Good luck with the meds and i think you've been given a great idea to get it xrayed O0

Meant to say, welcome to the forum from us in OZ :)
Hope to hear more about these little darlings you're looking after :smitten: :smitten:

welcome to the forums from us in oz too :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: i would suggest x rays or an ultra sound or maybe cat scan if they do that for piggies. sending hugs and cuddles to you and boyo and your other furbabies :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and the girls send :-* :-* :-*

Well Boyo's eye is still putruding and red. When I asked is it worth having x-ray the vet said no.
I think he's convinced that it is a tumour and there's nothing he can do about it. :(
Boyo is eating and active but not so outgoing like he used to be. When I put food in his house he used to grab hold of my sleeve and try to drag me in, he loved his little game. Then got in my way until I rubbed his head, cheeky little boy, I'm gonna miss him. :'(
Thank you for all your best wishes, I'll give him a cuddle for you. :smitten:

Is there another vet that you could get a second opinion from? Without an x-ray all the vet is doing is guessing, not making a proper diagnosis, and that's not right, in my opinion.

Id go and see another vet :-\ Hugs to your piggy :-* :-* :smitten: :smitten:

i would definately get a second opinion. vets are human and make mistakes sadly as our vet has and cost us the lives of guinea pigs, dog and a cat. NEVER take anything for gospel get a second opinion! where do you live? maybe someone can reccomend a good vet for you. hugs and cuddles to you and boyo. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-*

I'm still giving him meds at the mo. When he's finished them my sister is having them back.
There is a very good vet near her so she said she'll take him down to them.
Will keep you informed about his health.

Just an update on Boyo. Well he finished his meds, eye looked just the same but he seemed more lively
eating well being cheeky, kicking me when I tried to pick him up. ::) Headbutting me, all the usual stuff.
Then the eye became really red started to weep and then returned to normal size. Now it's as though
there's never been anything wrong with him. :-\. O0 It's such a relief.
O/H reckons that maybe the a/b's stopped whatever was behind the eye from "bursting". :-\
Hopefully that's the end of it. But I'll be keeping a close watch,
They are still with me because my sister has been ill so I said I'll keep them a bit longer. 0:) :) ;D ;D

glad boyo is feeling better.   sending hugs and cuddles to you sister hoping she gets well soon. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: keep up the good work you and boyo :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-*

I've some very sad news, Boyo died in aug.
Whilst ill he wasn't eating properly and developed dental problems.
He had a dental at the vet and seemed to be making a good recovery.

But 2 weeks later he had a stroke and died the following day.

He was a great character, loved being out in the sun on the grass.
He'll never be forgotten. Bye little Boyo.

Now my other piggy has developed the same eye problem.
The vet treated her and the day after the "abcess" behind the eye burst.
a lot of mucus has come out and she looks a lot better.
The vet seems to think that it just coincidence that Suzie has the same thing as Boyo. I only hope she doesn't develop dental problems too.

I'm sorry for the loss of Boyo, hope your little girl will be ok. is it from a poke wound? x

The vet couldn't see any wound on the eye other than an ulcer, he said was caused by her inability to close her eye. He said that there was something behind the eye, that turned out to be an abcess.

I took her to a different vet this time, and the time he took with was so much longer than the other one.

I'm sosorry to hear about boyo.
I hope your piggy makes a speedy recovery.
love & hugs.
