Hi everyone, I have a approx. 7 month old female piggie. When I woke this morning she was laying on her side with her legs twitching. She could not stand at all. I rushed her to the vets who gave her two injections, one of antibiotics and the other anti inflammatory. They said they thought she had a middle ear infection as she kept falling to one side. I have been syringe feeding her water ever hour and trying to feed her hay. What else can I do to help her?

The vet told me to put her back into her cage with my other piggie and she should be fine and they would like to see her again in a day or so. These are my first piggies and I feel so bad for her. I have read through other threads about early signs of illness and she didn't seem to have any of these before this morning.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

She is still laying on her side and twitching, she is drinking the water I am giving and managed half a strand of hay. I am going to try some mushed up pellets that I have soaking at the moment and see if I can syringe feed her them. But really have no idea what else to do apart from taking her back to the vets first thing. Any ideas please?

I am based in Warwickshire.

Is your vet an exotics specialist? I would personally be very unsatisified if that was all my vet suggested for a piggy so poorly. However I'm not familiar with the vets in your area, have you checked out recomended vets thread?

Hi Connie, the vets I went to is the one recomended on that page. She will be going back in the morning but is there anything else I can do tonight apart from water and trying to feed her mushed up pellets?

I gather that because you said cage, your piggies are inside? This will be good as you can help regulate her temperature better inside.

I cannot think of anything you can do accept make sure she is warm, fed and watered.

I'm glad the vets is a recomended vet! :) (I know we sound accusing, but there are many vets out there who know nothing and are very afraid to admit that they know nothing! :) )

If you are still concerned, pleas ring the vets. I know its late but all vets have some kind of out of hours service, in small vets they often give you a number of the nearest surgery that does. I have rung out of hours and spoken to vets, they wont want you to bring her in unless necessary but might be able to give you some more advice. :) It will also hopefully give you peace of mind.

Yes they are both inside, she is not eating or drinking apart from I can manage to put in a syringe. I will give them a ring now and see what they say, thanks. x

Poor piggy. Bingo had a similar case, ear infection. We had to see a specialist who prescribed septrin and metacam. It is really frightening finding them like that. I know. I've been there. Just keep her quiet and syringe what you can until you can get to another vet appointment to sort out treatment.

Fingers crossed for your piggy. Let us know how you get on.

Sammie went to sleep at 2pm today.

They think it was an ear infection which went into her brain. At the end she had lost all movement. Me and the kids have had a little service in the garden, I know that may sad to some but she was our little cutie. xx

Thanks for all your comments.

HUGS

I am very sorry to hear this; unfortunately, ear infections are one of those things that can kill even with the best of care. :{

Aw, I'm so sorry - was hoping it was good news today :...
Run free sweet Sammie and play safe with the others at The Bridge x>>

Very sorry for the loss of your piggie, you did everything you could for her. *big hugs*

RIP Sammie
