Help ;( Gi Stasis

What made the vet diagnose stasis? Were there originally any other symptoms? I would see if the vet will allow the Loxicom twice a day as pigs have such a fast metabolism. Is his breathing OK?

That's not so much a weight loss to be classed as an emergency. I'd weigh him again at the same time each day to see how he goes.

The recommended amount of syringe fed food is about 60ml to maintain weight so if you can get any more into him that would be great.

You know your piggy best so if you think he needs it then don't hesitate to go back to the vet. If he's not showing signs of improving shortly I wonder if it could be something else that's wrong with him.

For conversion that 17 grams. It could be the difference between a full or empty bladder. No one on here can give you a definitive answer. If you are overly concerned then you need to get back to the vets

He won't let me give him anymore, he hates it! It's so much of a struggle to even get 30ml in a day, it stresses him to the point he knackered himself out by struggling so much, I have tried every tactic there is, even swaddling him so he can't move but he will keeP shaking his head so much he wiggles so so so much, the problem is I'm back to work tomorrow :( I just want to see him better or even look better

No he originally had a slight respitory problem, then sudenrly all 3 of my guinea pigs stopped eating!? and he then said that there is a begin of stasis, but the other two have peeked up loads already, and pooing more today, but speckles isn't :( he is just sleeping all the time and lifeless, he is like a sack of bones

Breathing is fine I'd say, but he is also on septrim for his slight respitory infection

It sounds to me like there is something else going on. Septrin does not usually cause problems but every pig is different. I would get him to the vet as soon as you can for another check over.

I have been off for two days, and need to go back to work tomorrow, do you think tomorrow after 4 is too late I feel useless

4 o'clock should be ok as long as you are able to get as much feed into him before work as you can. I know it is difficult to juggle vet appointments around work. Are you working the rest of the week? if not I was going to suggest trying to get him to the Cat and Rabbit clinic in Northampton to see either Kim or Simon Maddock.

Yeah he's on loxicam, I see him munch now and again on some hay and I get all excited, he is so angry and depressed with me literally force feeding him it's stressing him so much But I keep doing it, but nothing made me sadder than just weighing him thinking he will weight even just a mini ounce more, and no he is less .. he is pooing-but barely! Like probably 1 poo in an hour, and there not formed more tear shaped..

Please be aware that the poos lag 1-2 days behind with slowed down guts; so they will reflect what has happened before, not now. Continue what you are doing. Don't freak out of there is some slow weight loss going on as long as your piggy is not feeling well and fighting you. Your first and foremost aim is keep the guts going; not getting the weight up. You are doing that; the guts are still working - that is good news.

It is unfortunately a desperate and deeply unpleasant job for any of us at this stage, as all you can do is hang in there and tough it out with a very ill piggy to give it a chance. I have been there myself, so I know how it feels, especially when exhaustion is setting in. HUGS!

Please speak to your vet again tomorrow.

PS: I second @helen105281 re. Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic. Simon and Kim have saved more than one of my piggies over the years when my regular vets couldn't help.
The Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic

I'm worried that I'm stressing him out so much with the syringing that he is feeling weak because all he is doing is sleeping :( I'll try get 10ml in him in the morning before work, I doubt he will let me do anymore.

I go to nine lives in redbourne at the moment and they have loads of guinea pig experience so I trust them quite a lot, I see Chris.

Do you think it would be ok if I gave him his critical care on some veg? As I no he will scoff it then and it's so much less stress for him?

Yes definitely. Get it into him any way you can. Just try to monitor how much he is having. I have heard of Nine lives. A friend uses them sometimes though travels to Northampton for anything dental.

All your support has helped me stop crying, I thank you all so much x a little pigture from his healthier days x

Just read this whole thread. I really hope Speckles is on the mend and that he is taking his critical care on the veg.

It is so hard when they have to be forced to eat/take meds. Hope you are ok.

Hi all, off to the vets again nowX speckles has munched a little and I tried syringe with veg today and didn't work, next step is asking the vet if he can have It with some apple juice! Apart from now speckles has never been ill before always been a healthy pig so I think that's why he hates the syringe so much because he's not used to it, fingers crossed for the vets, I'm worried he's going to ask for X-ray but I'm scared speckles is too week to be put under for it :(

Have you tried feeding him mushed up pellets yet? Much healthier than using sugary apple juice. the more he eats and the more fibre he gets into his guts the better.

Hi just came back from the vets, I have tried mushed up pellets but he hates it, I just tried the critical care mixed with 100% apple juice and he MUCH preferred it, still wasn't happy but didn't wiggle half as much.

So the vet felt a small lump on him, he gave him a slight X-ray (he wasn't sedated or anything), and it was hard to tell what the lump was, he did say there is slight inflammation etc, however he said his glucose levels are good, and his guts where sounding much better and more movement than last time. The vet has said as he has lost a few grams, but did say that his scales are abit dodgy! So he said I need to give him anything he will eat, veg apples etc and try fatten him up as much as possible until Monday.. then on Monday I bring him back if no improvements or lost more weight then he will need to be sedated and X-rayed properly as he will die anyway if not. He also tried to look at his teeth but was difficult (he is such a wiggle!) and he said if he ends up sedating him Monday then that is something he will look at aswell as the "lump".
I have just weighed speckles and the other two pigs (biscuit n buttons have perked up loads) and I have attached all their weights so far for you all to see...

Looks like his weight is fairly stable after the 3 days so hopefully he will be ok

Hi all, his weight was 1lb 11.5ouncss today, so on an overview it general is stable and it looks like it's just when his bladder is full or empty where the extra grams are coming from..

I'm in a tricky position, if by Monday he has remained the same like he is even though I'm giving critical care, do I just carry on like this? Or so I go through with sedation and get an X-ray?

I do feel like I am seeing him munch more now, but can't understand why the weight isn't going up, can't help but think something is feeding off what I'm giving him
:(

If his weight is stable, I would go for the X-ray.That way you'll hopefully get some answers xx

It all depends on how competent you think your vet is, and how well your piggy will recover.

If it were my current vet then I have no hesitation to do it, but if it were my previous vet I would possibly wait and explore other options first.

Did he give any clue what the lump is? Is it just under the skin so you can feel it, or is it deeper instead? A vet sometimes takes a needle aspiration of a lump to see what's inside it to try to work out what it is. It could be a harmless cyst.

Unfortunately I've gone through this with my baby- she was only about 6-8 months old and had to be hospitalized for a few days :( I had all those similar meds too.. and she didn't like them. But now my vet has me keep baby gas relief on hand all the time in case of upset tummy! And now daisy actually will run over to me if she smells it she loves her meds lol

I'm just worried about the sedation? :( he's 5 years old and very skinny at the moment, which increases the risks of complications.. id hate to think he'd die on the table :(

Did your vet not mention trying a conscious xray first? My vets will always try without any sedation first but it's not always possible. Bumble had an xray at 5.5 years but wouldn't lie on her side so had to be given a whiff of gas

They have done a conscious X-ray already but speckles was wiggly so couldn't do a proper X-ray and he wouldn't do one on his side, so couldn't tell what the lump was

Hi everyone
I have run out of emeraid critical care I don't no what to do because my vet is closed over the weekend :( speckles hates the Oxbow critical care!

Can you mush up pellets and syringe them for the time being? Most pigs prefer this to critical care etc.
