We have two guinea pigs; James and Clouseau. We just came back from a trip where we were gone for five days and a friend took care of the guinea pigs. Both pigs are boys and are one and a half years old (they are brothers).

They both looked fine when we left, but when we came back Clouseau was acting strange. When my mother stroked him, he began to make crying noises. They were given parsnip peels for the first time, but Clouseau was acting strange before that so we don't think that's the cause.

Today he's been very listless. He'll lie in the corner of the cage under this roof that we made, or in his house. He'll lie on his side with one side of his head on the ground. Now and then he'll stand up and make rumbling noises, and then switch which side he's lying on. When he lies down he kind of drops his head down. His head is usually in the corner and his eyes look a little wet. Sometimes when he stands up and goes to walk he seems a little wobbly at first, but then steadies.

When he goes to eat at the hayrack, he seems normal and will join James in asking for more food. He has been drinking water and there has been a normal amount of healthy looking poop. Both pigs have a consistent weight and are both eating.

Clouseau also has been touching his belly a lot with his nose; more than usual. I checked him for bloats, but his stomach doesn't feel hard or looked distended. I could not tell if it sounded hollow or not. It felt no different from James.

He is not overly warm or cold. We took him out to snuggle and he looked pretty out of it. He's still squabbling with James as normal and trying to dominate him.

Our guinea sitter said she didn't notice anything wrong with them. She said they ate their food every day. One day they seemed a little quiet but we both figured that they were probably just lonely; they get that way sometimes if they don't get much interaction.

I've been trying to find out what's wrong with him for several hours and haven't found anything that really seems like what he has. Any ideas would be a huge help. If he doesn't improve, we'll take him to the vet but we want to know what he might have as soon as possible so we can help him out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My guinea pigs eyes always have a little bit of moisture to them, he was taken to the vet three time once to get checked, after antibiotics for suspected URI and then checked third time by a new vet to get him insured they all said his eyes were fine so I wouldn't worry too much about that especially if he's eating and has good poops. If the eyes are watering so bad that it's literally streaming down his face then take to a vet asap :) The sleep habit sounds normal to me, my gi gi lies on his side his head down and all sorts of ways, has he been circling in one spot? When I had my scruffy he contracted the parasite econiculi (if that's how you spell it) apparently this was caught from some hay but I don't know exactly if this is the only way it can be caught. He circled in one spot and it causes the guinea pig to go sideways when walking, so when you mentioned him being unsteady on his feet you may want to take to him to a vet asap as this can easily go downhill fast like my scruffy did RIP. These are just my own experiences, this may not be great advice so I hope I haven't said anything wrong, but I'd get him checked out :) But don't worry about your piggy I am sure he will be fine, he might just be having an off day.

Hi there. Does he consistently tilt his head? I'm thinking he might have an ear infection, especially since he's wobbly. If he's eating and drinking and pooping I wouldn't call it an emergency, but I do think you should get him to the vet at your earliest convenience. That said, if he stops eating on his own etc it is an emergency situation. Sorry I don't have more advice than that. Good luck.

I would go with your gut instinct on this and get him seen by the vet as often when they start to be poorly there are odd signs which we pick up on like you have. It could be the start of a respirtatory infection or ear infection like Piglet and Roger's mama has mentioned.

Do you have a good vet nearby? If you are in the UK we have a recommended vets locator on the forum. If you are in the US other members may be able to help you find one, or I think there is a list on Guinea Lynx.
