hi guys, I was using a pepper to distract my piggy whilst I was cutting some matts out of his hair and I think he has eaten a little of the green part of the pepper. I then noticed he was acting as if he had something stuck in his mouth or teeth and he was doing this for about 5 minutes I gave him some cucumber to try help get it out and he ate it and stopped doing it. Ive put
Him back in his cage and he seems fine but I’m so worried about him eating the green part of the pepper and the mouth problem, please someone help :(

He seems absolutely fine now, he’s eating hay and acting normal, he was acting as if something was stuck in his mouth more than choking but he’s not struggling to breathe or anything

Really worried me, at first thought he was choking and couldn’t stop crying panicking :( then I noticed he was moving his tongue and sort of trying to move something , and now he’s fine , I am still a little worried about him eating the stalk of the pepper though :( just watched him drink as well with no problems so whatever was there must not be there anymore

Just keep an eye on him and see a vet if he seems uncomfy. Also see a vet if you notice the smell of decaying food in his mouth in a few days; that means that it could still be stuck.

Hopefully, it has sorted itself out!

Thanks guys deffo put me at ease. He has really sticky fur at the back of his bum but him and his cage mate are going through that age I think and hormones are running high and I think his brother has been humping him, I cannot get this sticky fur out I’ve even tried washing it and I can’t cut it as it’s stuck to his skin and it the fur is hard. Shall I take him to the groomers where he gets his nails trimmed and she could maybe clip it for me as I don’t have the guts to do that myself x

Hi! Have read of our boar care guide to see how to best deal with boar glue and all the other boar problems. You should find the guide helpful and interesting. ;)

Hi guys just a question how would I know if whatever was in his mouth isn’t there anymore had a smell and it smells normal but are there any other signs ?

Hi guys I think I’m gonna ring the vet I’ve just seen hi led down and chewing but I don’t think there is anything in his mouth?

I always call the vet with the slightest concern.
I’d rather be an over anxious slave than risk missing something that could be serious.
So, I support your choice and hope the vet reassures you that nothing is wrong.
And - if something is stuck it’ll get picked up.
Keep us posted

Hi I’ve just been feeding him his lunch and watching him and he looks like he’s really struggling to eat, especially with pepper I think something may be wrong with his teeth :(

So I have rushed him to the vets and the vet had looked into his mouth and there isn’t anything there but thinks his teeth may be slightly growing inwards towards his tongue they want me to take him off vegetables for a few days and only let him have hay and pellets and see if that helps and reduce the amount of vegetables he’s gettinas I must admit I do probably give them a little too much, can’t help but feel I’m too blame!

If he's eating well I would have thought it wasn't his teeth. Can you get an X-ray which should show anything stuck in his throat. Has your vet said why he should come off vegetables, seems a little strange.

Yeah, he put some tool right down his mouth and nothing was in there but he did say that his teeth are slightly growing inwards towards his tongue and he thinks that he may be struggling to eat bigger pieces of vegetables. I hand fed him peppers his morning and he was really struggling to chew them, I took a video but the files to big to upload to show you guys. He said the teeth aren’t terrible but he thinks that for the time being he should be on a hay and pellet diet, and in a few days time start him back on veg but no where near as much as I was giving him, he says the teeth will be diet related because he doesn’t eat as much hay as he should be doing due to too many veggies. He said if he’s not improved by next week to bring him back in and they will sedate him and grind his teeth down but he’s hoping by eating more hay over the next few days it shall do it naturally

Suppose your to far away from Northampton, there's a brilliant vet there, takes conscious dental treatment. Much better for the piggy. Yes diet can affect the teeth depends on when you got him, could have been a previous owner, i had an hamster that choked we managed o get the food out, but he could only eat baby food for a while cos his throat was sore. Lol but I don't advocate you do that.Good luck.

Thanks! Just worried about him being on an all hay diet as he really doesn’t eat hay at all and I’m scared he wil starve! Do you reckon they will grind down on there own if he’s eating more hay?

If he isn't eating much hay, then try different types of hay. Timothy hay is the best for wearing teeth down. Oxbow do a good Timothy hay. They also do orchard grass and oat hay which a lot of piggies enjoy. Pets at home have Alfalfa King Timothy hay which is also good. When he goes back on veggies you could try cutting it into strips to make it easier for him to eat. Pellets only make up 10% of the diet - they only really need a small handful a day, veggies should make up 20% of the diet and hay 70%.

they have 3 different types of hay in their cage at all times, one being the alalfa king timothy hay which is the one they probably like the most! Think ive been making the mistake of feeding them too many vegetables (sigh) and they haven't been eating as much hay as they should be, Today they had a scrap and have had to have their C&C cage divided, so maybe I can monitor him more now. Ive weighed him today and since last week he has lost 40grams. Which I'm a little worried about and wondering if its down to his teeth problem, I'm going to weigh him daily and see how he gets on. I'm feeding him a small amount of vegetables daily chopped into very small pieces so he can chew it without any problems. Hes eating a lot more hay than he was thank god, but personally I don't think hay alone is going to solve his teeth problem. As much as I didn't want him to get the teeth trim I think its going to be the best solution to getting him on the mend again. He had to go to the emergency vet again today as his brother scratched his eye and caused an ulcer (that's why theyre separated) so not sure if I should wait until that's healed. Hes on eye drops for 5 days before he has to be seen again
