My Guinea pig Felix has a swollen eyelid, it's the top one and it looks like it's blood shot. I can't see anything inside of it.

hi there & welcome to the forum,

you just caught me before going to bed.

has Felix managed to get a hay poke do you think? this seems to be quite a common problem just lately, lots of members seem to have eye issues.

try reading through these threads, they have some useful bits & pieces in them.

Hay Poke Emergency
Urgent Please Help : My Piggy Has A Blue / Cloudy Eye!

if its the eyelid as opposed to the eye its not such a problem.

but maybe until he gets to the vets, bathe the eye with boiled cooled water (egg cup full type quantity) with a pinch of salt added to it... no more or it will sting!
if you have a clean syringe, slowly drip the water into his eye that way or have a clean piece of kitchen towel & dip in the solution, then drip from above to flush out any debris or clean the eye.
its best to take guineas to the vets As soon as possible with eye problems as they can spiral out of control so quickly.
i would make an veterinary appointment first thing tomorrow

usually a dye is put into the eye to check for damage or ulceration, any foreign bodies (grass seed/hay bits) found can be removed with painkilling eyedrops & then usually either tiacil or fulcalthamic Spelling? are used (based on your location, these are used in the UK) if you could update your location (country, state or county is enough), the advice given can be tailored better to suit your needs, click into your account details to update.

hope he soon feels better. xx

hi and welcome :wel:,

sorry your Felix has a problem , if it is still swolen in the morning , it would be best to see your vet ! eye problems can get out hand
if not treated properly .
please let us know how Felix gets on

Hi and welcome!

Please see a vet to have it diagnosed and treated properly. if the blood and swelling is on the outside, then it is likely that scratch has gone infected, on the inside it could be conjunctivitis or an injury. Your vet will also check that the eyeball itself is not harmed and will medicate accordingly.

We have got members from all over the world, so we find it very helpful if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can tailor any advice more specifically to what is doable and available where you are. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thank you!

We have got a recommended piggy savvy UK vets locator on the top bar, but can provide a link to a list of recommended vets in other countries if wished.
