Just got home 20 minutes ago to find of one my piggies has massively hard bloat and has lost a whole load of hair under her tummy (Barber in discomfort?) .. she parps when she poops. She is still eating, licking, social.. so no behaviour issues... just looks massively bloated.. anything ideas before I go see the vet in half an hour??
thanks guys!

P.s. her and her sister get exactly the same food, but her sister gets first pick.. she may have nommed a bit of plastic bag a week or so ago.. blockage?

I have no idea? My first thought was constipation but if shes pooping it cant be... Maybe it could be a blockage of the intestine if she ate some plastic bag x

yeah thats what I thought.. its just the fur loss on the tummy that freaks me out. If it was just bloat then I'd be farely confident that some gut stimulant and a good massage of the tummy every couple of hours with plenty of hay would kick the problem..

if my vet doesnt know what to do I may have to move vets.. these guys are lovely and all but they the last time I went I came out feeling that they werent sure what to do...

Does anyone know a guineapig specialist vet in liverpool?

Fingers firmly crossed for your baby!

Thanks guys... it's not good news unfortunately. The vet wants an ultrasound and xray on Monday morning :( She says it fluid filled, possibly polyscystic kidneys or ovaries but she cant tell if it's cysts or growths yet.. and the diffuse lumps on the stomach are not helping. The hair loss she didn't comment on even when I asked, except to say that it may be an outbreak of mites as she has dandruff too. can mites keep to one piggy? The other has great skin.

The only thing I can be grateful for is that it hasn't bothered her appetite or her energy levels just yet so fingers crossed there wont be any serious turns before monday..

so worried. I've been so busy today I havent eaten yet but suddenly I don't feel like eating tonight either. 8... please be ok little one!

I am afraid I have no advice but after going through a worrying time with one of my own piggies at the minute (she had surgery today to remove four lumps), I know how you feel and I am keeping my fingers crossed and sending healing vibes for your girl x

Thanks.. I've always been pretty lucky catching things in the early stages so far... but all I can do is hope and pray she'll be fine until Monday!

Good luck with your bambi too.. healing vibes for post op babies! xoxo

Aww, poor girly :(

Mites can upset a piggy if they are feeling under the weather, so your other girl may not be showing symptoms, but still have them. However, I think the tummy is a strange place to have hair loss due to mites. Could it be she is kicking at her tummy due to pains? I know horses do this when they have colic, so just wondered if maybe she is and is scratching hair out as she does it. It's an idea.

I hope she gets better soon. Good luck at the vets on Monday! I really hope it's nothing too serious.

Just took a second look and the hair loss seems between the chest and tummy area... she also has a strange little growth on one of her nipples. I'm really hoping it's not mammary related...

Just caught up with this thread. Hope all goes well Monday. Sending lots of love and vibes her way x

Thanks! it looks like the hair loss is pulling. I'm wondering if theres anything I can rub on the fur to make is distasteful.. like how we put lemon juice or vinegar on our nails.. obviously i'm not gonna stick vinegar on her!... anyone got tips for barbering prevention?
