I have 5 pigs, wonderful pigs, my oldest is a year old, i adopted her from someone after i had my own for about 12 months now, her name is Daliela. t the time i had money, for food, and hay, pebbles lettuce, (Romain) things like that, but i do not have money like that. i need help feeding these pigs, they haven't had hay for about 2 weeks now. i feel absolutely horrible, because one of my pigs were pregnant. i was doing just fine taking care of them the 4th week they were born.. they died yesterday. all 3 of them. guessing it was because the mom stopped feeding them of low vitamin, c, and e. hay was needed I believe and i just cant do anything. please give me advise. is there anywhere i can get hay, if i cant in the next 2 days, i may have to find homes for the rest of my baby's... I've had them for months, but I don't wanna be selfish.

Oh my. You need to surrender them to a rescue ASAP as you are not meeting their needs; which is breach of animal welfare regulations imposed on anyone who is responsible for animals.
Though difficult, you must put their needs before your own.

I am sorry you are in such a difficult situation right now.

It does sound like the absolute best thing may be for you to contact your local humane society or no kill animal shelter and offer to hand your piggies over.

Hay is their most important basic need and it is an ongoing expense with guinea pigs. If you are struggling to provide that right now then giving your piggies to a place that can meet that need is really the kindest thing.

I’m sorry you find yourself in such a difficult situation. I’ll link to rescues in US below. Hopefully you will be able to find one. Or contact a humane society as mentioned above. Wishing you all the best and sorry for your loss.

Sorry I got sidetracked.

The thing about hay is that it's not just 'food' (80% of the diet should actually be hay) but it is hard work to chew and piggies teeth need hay to chew to keep them grinding down. They are like rabbits - the teeth just keep growing all the time. They might get easy calories from pellets or veg but if they aren't chewing hay through the day the teeth will be slowly growing too long and eventually they won't be able to chew anything at all. Depending on the piggie this can happen in a matter of weeks or months, and if it does the only solution is dental surgery at the vets which is crazy expensive compared to hay. Then they often need meds and special food the week after for the pain.

If your babies were 4 weeks old they should have been pretty much weaned from the mother and been eating solid food. Piggies wean quite early.

Circumstances change - we all know that - and you are definitely not the first person to post who has fallen on hard times recently. The loss of these babies has sadly made it clear to you that you need help now and it can't wait. The young are the most vulnerable. If you have un-neutered males in with females you will have more pregnancies on your hands as they are very fertile animals but each pregnancy risks mother and babies which is one reason this forum can never support intentional breeding. We can tell how much you love them but if you can't look after them then the best way to show that love is to give them up to a rescue that can. Contact a rescue locally to get advice and talk about surrendering the piggies so their needs can be met - they will be checked over by a vet and any little ailments treated, any who are pregnant will get the care they need. And don't beat yourself up... one day in the future you might be financially very secure and you can make a donation to that rescue to help the next person when the time is right. I'm sorry for your situation and your loss x

@Siikibam - did those rescues link in? I can't see anything but my internet keeps throwing me out so it's all going a bit weird.

I’m sorry to hear this. The best thing you can do for your piggies is to surrender them to a better life. Please contact your local rescues. I recommend also posting a page on a website called guinea pig finder. Local people searching for guinea pigs can adopt off of there. Go to your nearby pet store explain your situation and see if they could offer assistance with food or take your piggies in. Hay is absolutely necessary please act ASAP.

So sorry for your situation.
I can only agree that surrendering them is the best option for the piggies although the hardest for you.
It will feel like a bereavement so be gentle with yourself.

I would not recommend surrendering them to a pet shop or listing on a website.

@DalielaAnd5AmazingPigs have you been able to find a solution of some sort?

@Siikibam I agree in general I would not recommend that. Since these pigs are starving and are in a desperate situation it was just a worst case senario advice. Thank you for pointing that out and I should of further clarified that taking them into a shelter or finding a qualified friend or familly member would be the first things you should attempt. I would only post or work with the pet store if none of the above work and you aren’t able to come up with some kind of solution. Sorry and thank you for calling me out on that.

I know, you did mention them. But even trying to surrender to a vet would come before online and pet shop.
