please can someone help..... i just went to see my piggy and he has not eaten anything since yeasterday, he was off his food the other day but i gave him loads of grass and he munched that down..... but now he is not eating, ( and he AWLAYS eats)!

he is making a strange chumping noice every now and again with his teeth (i think) and every now and again he is lurching his upper body forwards,,, looks almost like he is reaching :'( i dont know whats wrong... can anyone help.... i have some "critical care" mixture a had from the vets a while ago for my bunny (and is suitable for pigs also....)

should i try this or ... owwww i dont know....... please help :'(

Have a look in his mouth to see if his teeth are ok. If the teeth are overgrown or he has broken one, that can be painful and he will be unable to eat.
I seriously advise you to take him to the vets as soon as possible though. They cannot live for long without food. In the meantime, try syringe feeding him the critical care and you can use organic vegetable baby food also.
Someone who knows more than me will be along soon to help more with syringe feeding I am sure.

Oh dear poor piggy - try and syringe feed him ASAP and make sure he drinks.
I am not an expert in piggy health but my piggy Lucky is poorly at the moment and everyone on here has been so helpful and supportive, so I am sure someone will be along soon with some more advice! O0

i have tried looking at his teeth. which is not an easy task, but my b/f held him and i put my finger in his mouth, but could not see anything, of feel anything..... he kept putting his big pink toung in the way lol....... he is dribbleing lots also, whihc makes me also think it may be his teeth,,,, i have called the emergency vets,,, so just sitting and waiting now :-(........... poor Loki

Poor thing - he's a very handsome piggie, by the way. It does sound like a tooth problem - your vet will sort you out. Good luck! O0

Awwww Thankyou everyone ! i just spoke to the Vet who saidkeep him in and warm for the night and give him critical care mixture! he is off to vets first thing 2morrow morning! :-\
i have filled the washing basket up with shreaded paper and covered it in a snuggely towle and he is all cuddled up now, bless his cotton socks! Thank you everyone for you help and support. the Vet also said that i is probably his teeth, hopefully he will be back to his usual greedy, chirping self 2morrow!! O0

Awww fingers crossed, bless him he is a very handsome little chap :smitten: :smitten:

He is a lovely boy. :smitten:

Glad the vet is seeing him tomorrow. Hope he will soon be better O0

awww he's gorgeous. get better soon. :smitten: :smitten: does sound like a tooth prob. i'm sure the vet will help! good luck O0 BIG HUGS AND PIGGIE KISSES TO YOU BOTH! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Awww I am glad he is getting to the vet tomorrow. He is a gorgeous boy :smitten: :smitten:
Let us know how he goes....if he needs his teeth clipping, a guinea competant vet should be able to do this without anaesthetic (sp?) which is much better for the piggy :)

you are doing the right thing feeding critical care, if a piggie doesn't eat it's stomach will shut down and it will never start eating, so feeding him critical care will start his stomach working again. is he drinking?
it's better for a vet not to give an anasthetic for teeth treatment. good luck

Piggy update.... Loki is still snuggled up. watching X factor with me! (my god they have some... Straaaaaaaaaaaange ppl on there) hehe!

I am worried about him having an anathetic, he is getting on for 4.5 years old.... is it more dangereous for him? and will he have one?? has anyone had a piggy who has had this done? and how much is it?? (not that cost matters when it comes to piggy health... but was just wondering) ...

I have heard some of the more knowledgable people on the forum say, that there is no need for a guinea pig to go under anasthetic for teeth work. So if a vet suggests an anasthetic for work on the teeth, i would question it, and maybe find someone who could do it without anasthetic.

Awww he is gorg - He looks like hes got a runny nose and crusty eyes :-\

what a lovely boy :smitten: Really hope he'll be ok. Got my fingers crossed

my girlies send him lots of love and piggy licks :-* :-* :-*

No, they dont have to put him under :)

Really hoping it gets sorted, def sounds like a toothy problem O0

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( Update is...Took him to emergency vet appointment this morning and the vet looked at his teeth and down his throte,,,, said that his teeth her not over grown,,, he does not have sores in his mouth... he said there maybe too possabilities.... he may have a piggy infection causing his throte to be swallen.... or :'( :'( :'( he is just getting old and his body is slowly shutting down.

i really dont want him to suffer, the vet gave him anti-inflamatorys, and anti bitotics to try and kick whatever it maybe... not if he is not better tomorrow they dont think there is anything they can do :'( and he will go and join the over piggys over rainbow bridge :'( :'( :'(

he is also really cold and his ears are cold. i have filled a box up with shreaded paper, and he is sitting on a warm hot water bottle and snuggled up in a fleasey towle.... :'(

i dont think he is going to survive the night :'( Thankyou everyone for your support and kind words!

AWWWWWW- noooo, thats sooo sad - Sorry to hear this but that is soo sad - I wanna cry :'( :'( :'( I really hope he gets better :(

same here ;) awww dear, poor little thing - bless him. At least he's all snuggled up cosy and comfortable.

:-* :-* :-* :-* c'mon Loki get better for mummy

Oh no, poor little Loki. :'( I am so sorry to hear he is so poorly, but fingers crossed it is an infection and he can fight it off. Are you able to feed him?

Best wishes from us all for Loki, we will think of you and him tonight and hope he gets better.

Katie & piggies x

I am so sorry to hear this, but antibiotics will take more than a day to kick in so I dont feel happy about the advice your vet has given you. I dont think you should give up on him just yet. Keep syringe feeding food and water to him and when you go back to the vets ask for the full course of antibotic, not just the one injection (I am assuming he gave him an injection?)
Keep us updated. It may be worth sending a PM to one of the mods who are very experienced in piggy illnesses, they may advise better than me.
