I think Velvet has UTI, found her this morning with a wet butt and it was quite smelly :(
She then seemed to be crying i couldn't see a wee or a poop tho.....i did find some wetter poops in the cage.
BIG problem what do i do? Remember she's diabetic, do i risk it and give her some cranberry juice until i can see Brendan or speak to the vets in 24hrs :...

I'm sorry I can't help you, but I hope Velvet is ok. Good luck. Hope someone comes along soon to offer you some advice.

I'm sorry Glynis :( Could Velvet not have been sitting in her own pee? I know that you can get unsweetened cranberry juice but I think it still contains sugar so I'm not sure what to suggest. If it were me, I would wait until I have spoken to the vet but that's just me. (((hugs))) try not to panic x

Thanks Claire xx>>>
i thought that at first but she does smell :{ and i wiped her clean with a white paper towel (soft) and it was brownish......... then the evidence of mushier poops and then she sat and was crying just a little ..... i'm afraid that's enough evidence for me to think she's not well :...
Yes it's a do i give the cranberry cause it will help or will it send her glucose levels even worse than what she already has, and that is extrememly high :(

I think I would leave off with the cranberry juice then until you can speak to your vet. You can always syringe her some water for now though as that will help to flush her bladder out xx

I'm sorry I don't have any advice but (((hugs))) for you and Velvet.

Yup it's sort of what i'd come to decide....sheesh this little girl so does not deserve this :(

Thanks Claire xx>>>xx>>>xx>>> i'm off now to go syringe her some water xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

She seemed to improve with the loads of water and a little bit of metacam......then this evening i noticed when she went SIM SIM.....she cried again :(
I'll be phoning the vets tomoro and seeing if i can see them with her or they'll give the baytril......i'd prefer septrin as i know what i've researched on here aka Laura's advice etc... but our vets go for baytril only.

I have the 'paws' probiotics (in powder form) that was given to Bella i was wondering if i diluted it, not what they originally said for piggies (1/2 tsp rolleyes erm yeah when Bella who is 19kg gets a heaped teaspoon!) i thought if i gave her like a quarter teaspoon diluted and syringed it might help too? any thoughts?

Hope that Velvet is feeling better soon. x x x

What about syringing her some watered down vegetable juice? My boys love this and it flushes their bladder out, my boys hate cranberry juice and the main thing to do with UTI's in flush the bladder with water.

Here is the usual link for guinealynx; could you print it out for your vet to read? That helped me finally break down my own vet's resistance against unlicensed antibiotics last year - especially after the baytril approach hadn't worked. It's been amazing how much more open to suggestions my vets have become since then! http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html

When Connie was having bladder problems and the baytril didn't work, my vet was reluctant at first to prescribe Septrin and he had barely heard of it. He allowed me to log in to this forum which prompted him to investigate further. He finally managed to order me some Septrin and was happy to prescribe it. When Eliza was having problems last year, they already had septrin at the surgery so there wasn't any problems. I am pleased to say that my vets now keep Septrin in :)

Went in with loads of info for Jacinta (Brendan not available) and she was fascinated by how much i knew rolleyes
anyways i have referred her to GL and also to TGPF and said the info that is there on both sites is from people who've had piggies for years so they know what they're talking about! She is going to do some more research!

re the Septrin, have not approached that as yet, will tho if the Baytril does not help (14 day course)

THANKYOU xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Isn't it great to find that the forum can help so many more piggies thru the vets being willing to learn.......i wish a load more would learn tho.....they tend to stick together, nothing wrong with that but ....... well you all know what i mean :x
Septrin has never been used down here as far as i know, i'm quietly but gently telling Traci (head nurse at vets) lots of the stuff i've been learning from you all and from other people who have had piggies for 25++ years!

THANKYOU xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hey Sweetie, big hugs to Velvey

Could you make barley water for her? Not sure about the sugar content you may need to check that out but I dont think it would be that high seen as barley is a grass like crop not fruit or veg. Will email Penny and ask.

Keep a close eye on Velvey with the baytril you know the nightmare we had with it, any sign she is not eating or pooping as well as she was I would stop the baytril.

Hopefully she will be fine with it and you dont need to worry.

Loads of love to you I know how worried you will be

Penny says barley water will be fine she has put link on digest for you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks M, yes Penny has messaged me and i'm going to source the barley tomoro (been at funeral today)
They've said i can give her cranberry juice (light ocean spray) 2 drops per 10-15ml cause of her diabetes

M yes i remember what you went thru :(:{
THANKYOU xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Update on UTI....

as you all know Velvet is diabetic

well we're on baytril twice daily 0.4mls and 2 drops of metacam per day, plus the 2 drops of Light Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice twice a day...........
i just can't get my head around this but why??

WHY? would all of a sudden her glucose levels go ZERO ?

please if anyone can help me, do i get excited? nooooooooo i'm not going to yet, i went and bought a new set of the diatix (glucose testing sticks for urine)
It just seems a bit unreal ?

ANYONE ?

Now i'm not sure what's up......... now when she poops she raises her butt off the ground does a tiny little grunt sound :...
Her poops are slightly mushier but i'm putting this down to the baytril. I have her on a probiotic just a teeny bit mixed in water and she's having the cranberry juice twice daily as well.

Still confused why her urine readings are not altering now since monday! @) She has always had the medium+ reading since being diagnosed with diabetes :{
