Hello everybody,
I'm just back from a pet shop in Derby, where I live, when I went in, I spotted the guinea pig cage, there must have been 12 of them, all different colours and coats, gorgeous! So I asked a member of staff if they were boars or sows as I need a sow friend for my piggy.
The girl said to me , which one do you like best and I'll have a look to see what sex it is.
So I asked her, is there any chance if you keep boars and sows in the same cage that they might breed?
She assured me that there couldn't be any pregnant ones as they were all under 12 weeks old.
I know in other pet shops have been the sows and boars were always in separated cages. I wasn't convinced so I didn't get any today.
Just wanted to know if you think I should go elsewhere.
Thanks.

Oh my, that is bad, pigs can breed from 4 weeks :(! Please consider a rescue for your new piggy!

The thing is I don't drive, so it's difficult for me to get to the nearest guinea pig rescue as there aren't any bus to get there and it would be far too much in a taxi!
I have also been to the RSPCA in Derby several times and the staff was most unhelpful, not able to sex the two babies they had at the time or to tell me when they would be available for adoption. I left my phone number with them and asked them to contact me when they knew and they never did.

Have you tried Honeybunnies? They are active in Derby and have guinea pigs. http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/rescue.asp?Rescue=461

At twelve weeks, you can be certain that any girls from that lot will be pregnant - poor sods. One of my first lot of (shop bought) piggies must have got pregnant at 6-8 weeks old!

Oh my word definately try to get a piggie from somewhere else.

How irresponsible of the pet shop.

In case you want to print out this page, highlight the earliest reproductive ages for each gender and give it to the shop manager!

Girls can get pregnant from 4-6 weeks (and we had 4 week pregnancies on here) and boys from 3-5 weeks old. Boys need to be kept separate from their mother and any sisters from 3 weeks onwards.

i know the problem you have with not driving i'm the same dont drive always the bus
maybe rspca lost your details give them a call you've got nothing to lose & could gain a friend for your little one x>>

Thanks girls,
I feel really cross now though thinking about it, no doubt there will be lots of people bringing them back 2 weeks after christmas along with the babies they gave birth to grrrr
I will give the RSPCA an other go, but I visited twice, phoned twice and emailed several times so it's not like I didn't try.
I'll tell them about the pet shop, they might have the power to change things.
