One of my guinea pigs has injured its foot and bled a lot. I put flour on it and the bleeding has stopped a few minutes ago but now he is very quiet and still - not like him at all. Is this normal after an injury? Is there anything I can do?

How did he hurt his foot? He may need a trip to the vets to be checked over and given pain relief if it is serious.

It is normal that a piggy is quiet after an injury. Did he pull out his quick?

He wriggled as I picked him up and slipped - he only fell about 2cm but he caught his toenail. Feel horrible about it! Is it normal for guineas to be out of sorts after an injury? If the bleeding has stopped does he still need to go to the vet?

Is the nail torn? Linney did that to herself once, running out of the cage and got her nail caught. It bled a ton, and she was kind of spooked afterwards (I don't think she knew what the heck had happened!) We didn't see the vet, though I did make sure the nail was clean where it has ripped (hers was basically ripped off right where the nail meets the foot- ouch!) and made sure to watch to make sure it wasn't infected. It healed up fine, though it took her a long time for the nail to regrow.

Thank you for the reassurance. He's wrapped in a towel and eating a grape (as a special treat!) and seems to be perking up. His nail seems to be intact so hopefully it will heal up quickly. I'll clean his cage out so his foot stays nice and clean, and put him back in with his brother, who is whining for him!

This is my first panic situation as a guinea pig owner (I've only had them for three months) so thank you for the quick replies!

i would take him to the vets just incase he has bruised himself (this can be painful) - they could also give him some metacam for a few a days aswell as it's pain relief and an anti-inflammatory. my rabbit bisc snagged his nail a few years back and this is the treatment they gave him.

keep a close eye on him (i'm sure you will anyway)

Make sure that you disinfect the toe with saline solution, which you can make at home by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt into 1 pint/500ml of boild cooled water. Keep an eye on the toe and see a vet if it looks swollen or not right.
