Hi,

Had korben to the vets today as his eyeball has ruptured 8...

Thought him and Neo may have been fighting, but vet thinks it may be due to hay..

Anyway its just cost me a heck of a lot of money and more to come and i need some advice.

As you know I'm really struggling atm, so if anyone has had something similar Id love to know how it turned out.

He is now blind, that cant be saved but I need to decide if I'm going to go ahead and amputate the eye or if i should try other treatments first.

Now, I would like to avoid amputating if possible, but she has said that I could try other things and end up still needing the op, and I dont know what to do.. atm he is on 0.4mls of metacam and 0.8ml of baytril. This is until Friday when we go back

Tori x

Oh i'm so sorry hun, poor little Korben. If he is blind end of, could you not just have it stitched or glued up? Dont know if that is possible but thought i would throw it out there. If he is forever blind now is it worth spening money on treatments which wont make any difference?

thanks, thats what i was wondering. I also thought we would have been given eye drops?

My puppy has to have a big op next month and my cat is in tomorrow, omg its all come at once. My phone is getting disconnected tomorrow :( just had to use the money arghhh!

(and before anyone has a go, their health comes first) x

This thread is current and relevant to your situation.

If your piggy does need to have the eye removed then there will be very little impact on quality of life, most piggies adapt very well and it has no impact at all. I've had many blind piggies, some from disease, congenital defects, injury etc and they all lived normal lives - even the completely blind ones. Only one had a penetrating injury like this but had received no treatment prior to coming into the rescue (several months after the injury). It had healed with a scar across the eye and had no sight, very luckily for the pig no infection had set in and the eye did not need removing.

How badly ruptured is it? Could the eyeball heal and be left "normal" albeit with no sight? IMO this would be the best option, as it avoids anaesthetics etc. although, saying that, if it were my piggy (age, health etc. considered) and conservative treatments were unlikely to be successful, I think I'd probably go ahead and have the enucleation. As others have said, if he's going to be blind in that eye, then either way, saving his sight isn't really an option that needs to be considered - it's more a case of what solution works for him (and you!).

Hope everything goes well with all the poorly furries!

Hey, noticed you'd posted on a thread about our piggies eye injury. There seems to be a lot of eye injuries on the forum at the moment :(

We were given some eye drops called 'fucithalmic' to put in twice a day, I honestly don't know if some eye injuries require drops and others don't. Cookie's on baytril and was given a shot of Metacam, we have to go back on friday and see what vet says as to keeping the eye.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge may be able to help you a little further. I really hope things turn out well for Korben and you. I understand how you are feeling. Keep us updated *Hugs* x

Fucithalmic is an antibiotic eye ointment that treats the membrane of the sclera (white of the eye) and the membrane on the inner surface of the eye (the thin layer covering the inside of the eyelid etc.)

So, unless this is affected, there'd be no reason for fucithalmic (although mention eyes in a vets surgery, and out comes the fucithalmic!)

You've been given all the info regarding the problem so I won't add anything further other than to say that I've had one pig come in with a ruptured eye which had been untreated and another that had a horrific acid burn down her face and so lost her eye. I can confirm that it will not effect the quality of life at all. Lily (acid burn) lived her life out here with me. She also came in typically on a Friday night and so had to have the surgery out of hours and it was rather a quick op for the amount of work you'd think needed doing.

Took a pic today, and its a lot better. I know it looks bad but its improved since 2 days ago dramatically..

It was all cloudy with white stuff and blood actually coming out of the middle of the eyeball.... really hoping the big change so quick is going to mean that he doesnt need it removed :)

I've only just seen this, poor Korben :(
They say things come in threes don't they mallethead
I hope things turn out as well as they can do for Korben, piggies are resilient little creatures though, so I'm sure he will bounce back from this, good luck xox

if this is a haypoke could anyone explain why he is losing the fur round the eye? he had already lost some and the vet removed some, but I'm a bit confused.

I'm also worried about putting Korben-zeus back in with neo when he has recovered incase it was from a spat x

Tori you know whee are all sending darling Korben

lots of healing wheeeeeeeeeeeky loves from the girls and I XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

thanks!

He sees ok, not pooing as much as normal, but vet said that could happen, or he could get the runs.

He is ok in himself, although isnt making much sound and isnt complaining when I pick him up. Dont know if he just wants loves or if he isnt feeling like complaining.

Ive got him at Dels (I'm there now) as its just a 3 min walk to vets incase anything does happen

feeling a bit sorry for neo as first ash dies, then jorbens been removed. Dont think he knows whats going on :(

Thanks for asking x hows your girls?

Well, can anyone answer my question about the fur please?

Hey Mstori, no idea on the fur unfortunately, just wanted to say hope Korbens eye is improving today. Hopefully someone can shed a little more light on the fur issue x

That looks just like Poppy's eye was, don't worry, I am 99.9 percent sure that given about five to ten days on the baytril and painkillers and it will heal. Poppy had hers stitched up for five days, should have been ten but she has pulled them out rolleyes, her eye has just got a little white blob on the suface now where the injury happened and all the cloudiness has gone. Maybe it would be beneficial for her to have it stitched closed to give it chance to rest and get better, worth a mention to the vet do you think. Hope he is better soon. x
The fur thing looks a little fungal to me, has your vet said anything?
