hi I'm new and after some advice.
My guinea pig melody had a fall tuesday she got freaked by loud noise :( whilst my daughter holding her. We took her to the vets and were told she has a broken hind leg, they gave us 2 options
1. Amputate
2. Leave it to heal itself

But i really dont know what to do shes only 4 months old my melody, i dread her having such a major operation so young.
But on the other hand to leave it to heal itself is cruel is it not this is my vets advice?!Does anyone have any information for me? any advice would be really apprieated. I'm so stuck i dont know what to do. vet has said that splinting her will do no good as the break is in awkward place to fix. I feel awful that shes got such crap start in life and want the best for her what should i do?:( :0

id get a second opinion tbh its best to know everything before you decide. went to two vets with piglets ear problem one said operation the other leave it and put him down if its gets worse. as it if he has just adapted so ** to get all the info :-)

when guinea pigs are so young the broken leg depending in which area can heal fine by its self as the bones are so soft they fuse together really well.

second opinion make sure you know everything first (my daughter is called melody)

I had a baby piggy with a broken leg once. The vet set his leg and splinted it. Even though we were told it was the worst place he could have broken it, it healed fine.

Poor thing! :0 :0

I would go to another vet for a second opinion, but if they were still the options, (depending on how bad it is broken) I would leave it to heal itself. At least then she'd have all her legs! {:|

But, if she lives with other pigs, I think it would be best to remove her and put her in a cage next to them, so she can still talk to them, smell them etc, but just incase of something happening. For example, if they try to play with her it could injure her leg even worse. :{

Good luck! xx>>>

Second opinion for sure :)

If you give an idea of your area you live somebody may know of a cavy savvy vet :)

I also replied on your other thread.............

GOOD LUCK LITTLE MELODY xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope she will be OK, it's worth while taking her to another vet for a second opinion.
