Hi, I noticed yesterday that my piggy had blood on her nails and so i picked her up to have a look. It looked like she had caught her nail on something and it was bleeding where the nail meets the skin( the nail was a bit overgrown as she's a nightmare when i try to clip her nails). I bathed the foot in salt water and put some flour on it to stop it bleeding (I read somewhere that that can work, does it?). She didn't seem in any pain, and just went back to eating hay when I put her back in her cage. I kept an eye out to make sure the foot didn't start bleeding again and it didn't. Today her foot is a bit swollen but seems to have mostly scabbed over. She doesn't seem to be in any pain and I don't think her toe is broken, she's walking on it fine, not holding it up or anything. I just wanted to know if there is anything else I can do, I don't really want to go to the vet, but I can take her if necessary. Am i overreacting, or will her foot just heal on it's own?

Don't know if this helps or not.

Hi!

It depends on whether the quick is affected or not. If in doubt see a vet. In most cases the nail will grow back, if often somewhat deformed.

See a vet promptly is the toe is infected; swollen and hot to the touch.

To prevent this happening to her again and to your other piggies, i would reccomend have someone else hold your gps while you clip their nails. Or if you dont want to do that you could have them cut at a vet for a small fee.

Or if there's a rescue near you they may cut the nails for a donation.
