I have five guineas, three boys and two girls. Today I discovered that one of my boys ears has two chunks taken out of it, which seem to have scabbed over. It must have happened in the last few days. I have removed him for the night, and put him in another hutch with the most docile of my boys (i.e. the least likely perpetrator) so he is not alone. I don't want to remove him from the group as they seem to get on so well (or I thought they did) and behave a bit like a small colony. I am so upset about this, I really don't know what to do. Advice, please...!

This happened because you cannot have the combination of guinea pigs living together that you have. You can only have one neutered boar living with sows or two boars together. I would have two boars together and then the remaining boar with the sows.

Do you have the three boars and two sows all living together? Are the boars neutered?
I don't mean to sound harsh but this can be a very dangerous set up and serious fights could break out.

Also if the boys are in the same room as the girls (even if different cages).. or you handle the girls before the boys, this can lead to boy fallouts...

If the ear is scabbed over and healing dont panic about it. However you do need to sort out your set up. Firstly are the boys neutered? If not you'll have three very pregnant ladies now. Three boys will rarely work together, so heres a few suggested and trusted groupings:
- two boars (not within proximity or sight/smell of sows)
- any number of sows in a group
- one neutered boar with any number of sows (more than one boar in with sows will result in serious fighting)
