Hi I'm a new guinea pig owner as my MIL very kindly surprised my 10 year old with 2 boys in May.

I've never had guinea pigs before and so have had learn quickly.

We keep them indoors in a large cage in my daughter's bedroom. She came to me to say their fur looks funny.
I took them out for a look and it's like their white fur has flecks of black.

Please can you tell me what they are? If they are bugs how would they have got to them indoors?

Do we need to see a vet or treat at home?

Thanks!

Sounds like it could be the egg casings to hay mites. The mites themselves are invisible to the naked eye. Pop them along to a cavy savvy vet who will be able to prescribe an appropriate strength invermectin product for you to treat them with. Please don't use shop products as these are generally not strong enough and help the mites to develop resistance. The treatment will need to be used 3 times to ensure all hatching mites are caught you prevent them coming back
