Hi everyone,

My name's Louise, and after months of research, 12 days ago I became Mum to two young male piggies, Reid and Hotch. I should say that I did get them from a pet store, after trying to adopt but there were none, and then I saw these two little boys come into the shop, and I hoped to rescue them before too much damage had been done, and until 2 days ago I thought it had worked.

Something else I must tell you, is that i'm currently living in South Korea, and if you thought some of the stores in the UK were bad, well, let's just say that pet care in general here is all about making them 'look cute' and not about them (people have left lots of animals out in the streets when they get bored, i mean lots!)

So, anyway sorry about the long post, but basically i'm a little worried about them. They seemes fine, and were growing nicely accustomed to their new house and me, even if i was still struggling sometimes to decipher their noises (they seem to have way more than people normally just talk about). But I am VERY worried that I may have infected them with a cold. I've had a sniffle and bit of a cough, and whilst i washed my hands a lot etc, i still had to clen and nurture them and i know it's possible to catch an illness. Woke up yesterday to little Reid sneezing, at first just now and then but it happened i'd say maybe 10 times in the day. I should point out, that i brought them a new wooden house the day before, and they had to have a rabbis shot on Thursday (it's frequent here) as well as getting some medication incase of mites. They seemed fine after, but i'm worried that either they are allergic to the medication, something in the house? Does anyone have any similar stories to this?

BUT, the main issue is, being new i panicked, and took them to the only vet i know in the area who even stocks things for guinea pigs! But he seems to think i was over-reacting, and said it "was a cold" not a URI as he couldn't hear any chest difficulties. The only thing he gave was some drops to put on the nose?! Yet, now i think Hotch may have sneezed this morning too, I've cleaned their house again, and while they seem to be eating well and drinking (this morning they were even popcorning) they've gone into the house now and quite quiet, is this normal for middle of the day?

I know most of you are still in bed, lol, but please, some recommendations of what to do would be good. Despite what it sounds like I have done an awful lot of research, and am wondering if i've just over-scared myself maybe?

Home remedies much appreciated! Thanks in advance x x

P.S Thankyou also for all the great posts i've previously been reading, lots of great advice for newbie parents :)

Oh also Reid has a small dry patch of skin behind one ear, it's a bit like a dry scab, they've had their first treatment for mites (something called 'Revolution') that was just a liquid put on their necks. Should i still be worried, or see what happens? Basically i'm worried this vet knows nothing, and is just doing what he might do for a cat or whatever.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I hope your piggies are going to be okay - I would've just suggested going to a vet which you've already done but hopefully there'll be more experienced people along soon to help,

x

sorry I don't have any advice other than I do sympathise with you being in a country that doesn't necessarily have cavvy savvy vets at your fingertips. The best vet I have found struggled to sex my girls which leaves you lacking in confidence in everything else they say!

I have found this forum very helpful and some members on here have a wealth of medical knowledge. I'm sure someone will be along to give you some advice.

It sounds like you are doing everything right! They sound okay, if they have been treated for mites & he says their chests are clear, they could be sneezing because of their bedding (what do you use?) & maybe take the house out of their hutch if you are worried.

Yes they do sleep in the day sometimes. mine are asleep now (nearly midday here) sometimes they are wide awake when I go to bed lol :)) Your English is perfect by the way rolleyes

Sneezing can have many reasons, not necessarily URI -I would suspect URI only if you have at least two of the symptoms on the list.

Dust or a hay allergy can be the cause for increased sneezing. Piggies also tend to sneeze when they clean themselves.

Keep an eye on that scab - mites and fungal often look similar, but it can be just something that happened in the shop?

Wishing you all the best with settling in your piggies. I am sure that they teach you soon about what they want; they are such expressive, communicative little things!

Thanks to all! I think it is probably an allergy Reid has, apart from the sneezing he seems very happy. I shall keep an eye on him, but hopefully he'll be fine, fingers crossed :-)

Though, i think you're right about the fungal problem, i've just discovered a similar patch on Hotch's back. I can't see any parasites, and it looks mainly like fungal. I shall try and find a more experienced vet tomorrow, but if any one has any home remedy's to soothe them until i can it would be brilliant!

Thanks again.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I also thought your English is perfect, maybe you are an ex-pat?

Oh and yes, by the way, I am an ex-pat. British teaching in South Korea, so at least you said my English was good, haha :-)

Hi Louise, Reid and Hotch welcome to the forum :)
Good on you for doing your research!
OK as for sleeping during the day, my girls do this it is something they love to do......stretch out and have a snooze. I find my girls are particularly active morning and nights......i don't see them overnight as they live downstairs in our workshop (it's a lined room and no breezes) but i do know they've been active overnight because i find their houses moved rolleyes and of course they've munched up all their veggies :))
When you clean out make sure you don't use any cleaning products, i use a VERY weak solution of water and white vinegar, i then wipe over everything and then wipe it all dry. If you are using hay, give it a shake first there could be hay particles they can irritate their noses (and us too!)
I've been a piggie grandma (two of my children's pets) and now a mummy and i still panick! I find i come onto here and do my research and then go right....off to the vets. I do have a cavy savvy vet, well as far as Australia goes he's one of the best. So you're just being a caring mum!
Enjoy your boys and please post some pigtures when you get time in our stories/photo's section.
If you have any other queries other than health issues make sure you pop them in the right section so you'll get more help that way.

Glynis, Velvet and Onyx x
